Portland dining, including gastropubs, for a first timer over Labor Day

We doing an Oregon thing--the coast, Columbia River gorge, and Portland. Would like some good casual and upscale recommendations for the Labor Day weekend. Since I hear Portland is the brewpub capital of the US, would also like advice about some that have good food in addition to great beer.
