Myrtle Beach Best BBQ

Northerners need advice to find best pork BBQ joints in or near (within about 30 minute drive) of MB. Prefer somewhere that offers a few sides although it doesn't have to be fancy or a buffet. We've tried a few chain restaurants in the past, we'd love something a little more "old school!"

  1. Haha! In the South barbeque IS pork! I can't help you with MB Q but if you are driving down from up north there are some places in NC I can recommend. Look at this link:

Not barbeque, but Calabsh, NC has great fresh seafood. The local shrimp are exceptional this year. It's just across the state line from MB.

    1. What's your route from North to MB? I will help you out. Hog Heaven is the best around but it's at Pawley's Island some 25 miles S of MB. Prosser's is also outstanding but it's in Murrell's Inlet some 20 miles S of MB. Let me know your route to MB from up N. There's some fine BBQ
      along I 95.

Hog Heaven BBQ, Seafood and Country Cooking @ 7147 Ocean Hwy., Pawleys Island, SC 843 - 237 - 7444.

      Prossers BBQ @ 3750 U. S. 17, Murrells Inlet, SC. 843 - 357 - 6146.

Thanks - we aren't driving...but we've been both to Pawleys and Murrells before so we could get over there. We could also cross the line back into NC if we aren't going too far.

Don't remember anything resembling a restaurant on Pawleys Island. Is restaurant located on main road before you cross over to the island?

Hog Heaven is on Highway 17 W of Pawley past the golf course on your way to Georgetown. Little Pig's BBQ is a joint on Highway 17 at 62nd St. that serves outstanding BBQ.

          Little Pig's BBQ @ 6102 Frontage Road, Myrtle Beach, SC 843 - 692 - 9774.

J Edward's is the best BBQ in Myrtle Beach located SE of the AP between Williams and 24th on Highway 17.

          J Edward's BBQ @ 2300 South Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 843 - 626 - 9986.

Are you talking about BBQ restaurants or any kind of restaurant. Pawley's Island has some fine restaurants. Have you been to High Hammock, Bistro 217 or PIT. There are more also.

            Bistro 217

maybe I got it confused with another area but I remember the island itself was small with a little inn and post office, lots of cottages and beach houses -- just a wonderful place without the commercialism of MB! All of the retail and shoppes seemed to be back over the bridge on the main road.

You are not confused. I call the whole area Pawley's Island. Leaving MB I call the next area Murrell's Inlet and then Pawley's Island. I'm used to going to Destin, FL and calling the whole area Destin when you have Destin, San Destin, Santa Rosa Beach, Rosemary Beach and others. I call it all Destin. Sorry about that.

You are talking about the little town on the beach. All the restaurants are located on Highway 17. There are not any restaurants on the little island itself that I know of.

If you go to Pawley's have a lowcountry lunch at Pawley's Island Tavern or go for dinner and hear some live music. It's a fun place and you can dine outside.

                  Pawley's Island Tavern @ 10635 Ocean Hwy., Pawleys Island, SC 843 - 237 - 8465.

Absolutely agree with Prossers - I'd go so far as to say that that's the ONLY BBQ in MB.

Thank you, we will try at least one of the rec's...too bad we won't be there for the BBQ fest!

If I had to do just one it would be Prossers.
