Recommendations for Casual Restaurants Near Market & 4th?
We will be spending 8/27 - 8/29 at the Palomar Hotel at Market & 4th. We will have a car since we are coming from Sonoma County to visit museum exhibits, etc. , but would rather not try to find parking in the evening. Looking for casual restaurants that are walkable from the hotel. Any cuisine works for us. Recommendations?
B Restaurant is pretty close in Yerba Buena. They have a pretty good burger and also dollar oysters at happy hour. Samovar Tea Lounge is also in that area. For a good takeout sandwich at lunch, The Sentinel is pretty close by. If you feel like splurging a bit, the Fifth Floor is also right in your hotel.

Your hotel is right on top of the Powell St Bart/Muni station, which means you're in walking distance to most of the city. For example, you can hop on BART, heading towards Millbrae/Daly City/SFO, ride 3 stops, get off at 24th St., and walk 20 feet to El Farolito for an al pastor super burrito. $3.50 round trip, plus about a block's worth of walking. Possibly more casual than you're looking for, though if you''d like an authentic San Francisco experience, this certainly qualifies.
Or, heading the other direction, you can take BART two stops to Embarcadero, then walk two blocks to Tadich Grill. Another authentic San Francisco experience. Try the sand dabs.
You can cover almost the entire city fairly easily, so it's kind of difficult to make recommendations without more information about what you're interested in. For what it's worth, I definitely recommend the bar at the Fifth Floor, which is in your hotel. Excellent cocktails. The restaurant is also quite good, but probably doesn't qualify as "casual."

Marlowe is a few blocks south of your hotel on Townsend near 4th. It's a friendly casual place with good food. They're famous for their burger. Also try the bone marrow and brussel spout chips.

Marlowe may be "a few blocks south" but it's almost 1 mile from Market & 4th.

It's also not a particularly pleasant walk.

Annabella's is right downstairs. Not ground-breaking cuisine but always reliable.
My boss and a few others went to Thermidor (in the Old Mint, on 5th and Mission) the other night and raved about it. That's a reasonable walk, tho don't go any further down Mission on foot....
I would also recommend Lulu's on Folsom just off 4th.

I think it's telling, yet sad, that every one of these recommendations is south of Market. Are there any decent eats closer to Union Square? (That's a rhetorical question.)

I have not been to either Scala's or Kuleto's in years, so hesitate to recommend them. I was at the Daily Grill about 2 years ago, but it's not that special, just OK. I was last at Max's about 5 years ago, ditto. I don't think I've been anywhere else closer to Union Square.

Outisde of the places inside department stores like Burger Bar, there aren't really many restaurants, period, between Union Square and Market/4th. The space in those blocks, especially near Stockton, is oriented toward shopping rather than eating.
There are a couple of decent Thai places closer to Powell, plus Market and 4th isn't all that far from the good ethnic eats in the Tenderloin.

Scala is always good. Union Square
Frontera Grill, Basement Macy's for slow Cal -Mex fast food. The Chipotle Chicken Torta for me. Very casual.
Pazzia nr SFMoma: pizza and pasta. Haven't been for a while but the rep is still good.
Lots of fast food in the basement food court at Westgate and above. For dessert: Beard papa.

I like Little Delhi that's near you for Indian / Pakistani. I really enjoy their Butter Chicken.

Also, there's a Pearl's, a burger joint that always pleases when I take people from out of town. It's going to be quite a few blocks away, but still well within walking distance. Just remember to go up to post and then go over or else you'll go through a pretty seedy part of town.
