Los Agaves (Santa Barbara)

  • 7

I was up in SB yesterday for business and scheduled my whole day basically around stopping in at LSR. Every time I'm in town, I try to make a point of eating here. Crushingly, I arrived to find that they're not open on Wednesdays...ended up trying out Los Agaves, a Mexican grill which is about a block south down Milpas toward the 101, and I'm really glad I did. The place was absolutely packed at about 2 PM, but after getting through the line and finding a table, my order arrived in just about 5 minutes. The sorrow of no La Super Rica was soon tempered by a fantastic al pastor pork, rolled into a grilled tortilla with melty, soft white cheese and pineapple chunks. Topped off with their smoky brown chipotle salsa, it was sublime...sweet, smoky, savory, cheesy. The rest of the menu looked impressive and I will definitely make the time to get back here (as well as hitting up LSR on a day other than Wednesday).

  1. I've re-learned the "no Wednesdays" rule at LSR more than once over the last 20 years, but I'm hoping that hearing the story from someone else will now glue it to my soul!

You know what, I could have sworn that one time I did go there and it was open on a Wednesday??? but otherwise I usually or 99.9999% of the time it's not open on Weds.

There was a time when La Super Rica was open every day except for a slow time of the year when they did close on Wednesdays. Not sure about their current hours.

    2. I love, love, love Los Agaves. Every time we have eaten there, the meals have been fantastic. Also, I find it to be reasonably priced for what they are serving. My husband had the grilled beef short ribs last time we were there................so freakin good

      1. I ate there yesterday as LSR was too packed and I did not want to wait in-line. Los Agaves is a gem of a restaurant, cafeteria style and packed with locals coming to eat their food. There special yesterday was chile en Nogada which is probably my favorite Mexican dish. It was sublime, ground meat, apples, hint of cinnamon, all wrapped in a perfectly cooked poblano pepper topped with walnut sauce, and pomegranate seeds. Blew me away. People waiting in line asked me what I was eating and I just pointed at the board. Had a carnitas taco on the side, soft porky and flavorful........i was in pure mexican bliss. As much as I like Super Rica, I think this may be my new food spot when I visit Santa Barbara as it is not to be missed.

We've been three times fairly recently, and enjoyed each visit.
