MySimon and CH

Like many hounds (maybe all) today, I received a join-up invitation to MySimon from Chowhound. MySimon has started a coupon discount service ala Groupon, which is all the rage these days... ala Blackboard,, even Zagat.

Fair enough, but worried that Chow is selling or distributing their membership list to others. Discovered that both Chow and MySimon are owned by CNET so that wasn't the case. It's not like they're selling the subscriber list. But still it feels we've all been put on a non Chow mailist without permission.

That said, I don't begrudge CNET trying to make a dime, even though they're climbing aboard what's become an over-crowded bandwagon.

  1. I received no such email.

Go to your "My Chow" page. Click on notifications. If you don't want announcments, unclick that box.

    Huh ... MySimon still exists?

I did not receive any such e-mail either.

I still want announcements from CH, just not ads. Hopefully, this will be a one off, so no big deal. But if it continues maybe I will mark it off.

"I still want announcements from CH, just not ads."

I don't know. Targeted ads can equal, and may at times surpass, announcements (as long as they aren't inundating ones mailbox) for value. Just a thought.

They are pretty specific about that box "CHOW Announcements - Updates from CHOW and special offers from CHOW partners "

Since MySimon is a partner, what you received is exactly what they said you would get by clicking that box.

Looking at your profile, you have been participating in Chowhound since 2008. If that is the first email you ever got .... well, what can I say?

So ... I don't have that box checked ... do you get anything at all from Chow ... like with this new release, did they send an email out announcing it. I might click on the box if site announcements were sent out. For me, it was just a habit. I never click those types of boxes on any site.

Anyway, adverstising keeps this site going and it is not compulsary. Deleting a few emails seems a small enough price to pay for admission.

You are right. Very small price for a great site which hAs really led me to some great finds.
