What else to do with electric rice cooker?

You ought to be able to do more with an electric rice cooker than just cooking plain rice. What other uses have you found for it? For me, I'm gonna get some barbequed rice strips from Chinatown (hanging in the store windows down there), slice it up, put it in the bottom of the cooker with some rice and water, and turn it on; I'll see how it comes out. But d there ought to be some more interesting ways to use the cooker.....shouldn't there? Please share.

  1. Do a search for "rice cooker" on the boards -- there are lots of suggestions. Also go to Amazon & search for rice cooker cook books.

    There's even a little cookbook designed especially for college students using a rice cooker in their dorm.

    I make pilaf with leftovers all the time, Mexican rice (with tomatos/salsa, onions and peppers), as well as rissoto. My hubby LOVES to make steel-cut oatmeal in the rice cooker. Don't forget that you can jazz up you plain rice just by using something other than just plain water. For instance, I like to use chicken stock. Jasmine rice is especially good if you use coconut milk, or a mix of coconut milk and stock.

I use mine for hard-cooking eggs, poaching chicken, serving fondue (the lid comes off, it's a cheap one) heating soup, anything I would do on the stove when I don't want to heat the kitchen so much. Mine also has a steamer basket insert, so I can steam veggies and/or fish while cooking my rice.
