Japanese Restaurant for Birthday Dinner - Downtown Toronto
Hi Chowhounders!
Getting a group of about 16 together for a birthday dinner. We'd like to go to a Japanese Restaurant downtown but aren't sure which is big enough to accommodate a group and has reasonable prices.
Thanks for your recommendations!
Mango
Ematei, best Japanese restaurant in the downtown core, and it has large areas in the back

I love the Sushi Inn on Cumberland, and it has a downstairs room.

We've always liked Ematei as well, but I'd throw Nami into the mix as well. I don't know if their robata bar is big enough to accomodate your group, but we've had big family groups there before, and the food is always good (especially the salmon belly!).

While Ematei gets strong recommendations, I didn't have the best experience there last year with respect to service and very sloppily made nigiri. However, it would appear that it was an off-night because they still get lots of recs on CH...
I have had consistently great rolls at Etsu, which is on Baldwin. If you talk to them ahead of time, you should be able to reserve a group of 16. There's certainly enough room and I saw a group of 12-15 people there tonight. Great service, really like their Rik Roll (which I'll admit that I ordered on a whim because of it's name more than anything)

So I recently heard - I didn't look into it before going so it appears that we all made terrible mistakes ordering sushi :) Any recs? Maybe I'll give it another try.

The sushi isn't awful -- it just isn't worth getting. Go for grilled fish and specials.

I remember going to Yuzu and seeing something about them having private rooms, so you could try there.
