Driving from Atlanta to Knoxville

Hi all,

I'm flying from Seattle to Atlanta and then driving to Knoxville. I'm looking for recommendations of good BBQ places, hopefully smokey meat, that are either on the road or in Knoxville. I'll take any other good food recs too.

Thanks
-barry

    1. re: Littleman

Thanks I already planned on going to Williamson Brothers, I'll have to check out Miller too. Any places in Tennessee?

    2. It's 120 miles from Atlanta, GA to Chattanooga, TN. If you stopped at Williamson Brothers you may not want more BBQ. If you did not stop at WB's and want BBQ then don't stop in Chattanooga, TN but go 20 miles to Cleveland, TN for great BBQ @ Jordan's BBQ. Get off I 75 at Exit 27 on Paul Huff Parkway and go 2 miles to Jordan's BBQ. PH Parkway will turn into Stuart Road NE when you pass Walmart about a mile from I 75.

      Jordan's BBQ @ 910 Stuart Rd NE, Cleveland, TN. 423 - 478 - 2171.

If you want country food then stop in Chattanooga. Get off I 75 at Exit 1 in Chattanooga, TN and go W on Ringgold to Wally's Restaurant for good country food for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Or get off I 75 at Exit 5 in Chattanooga, TN and go S on Shallowford Road to Country Place Restaurant at Hamilton Place for good country food for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They have a neat country store in case you are in the mood to shop for local goods.

      Wally's Restaurant @ 6521 Ringgold Road, Chattanooga, TN 423 - 899 - 6151.

      Country Place Restaurant @ 7320 Shallowford Road, Chattanooga, TN 423 - 855 - 1392.

Check out the menu on their websites to pick the one you like the best. Both are a minute off I 75.

When you get to Lenoir City, TN you may want to stop for BBQ at Calhoun's or Leo's. Calhoun's is located at Exit 81 and open for lunch or dinner.

      Calhoun's Restaurant @ 4550 City Park Dr., Lenoir City, TN 865 - 988 - 9838.
      Leo's Pulled Pig @ 312 West Broadway St., Lenoir City, TN 865 - 988 - 5151.

      1. It's 3 1/2 hours from Atlanta, GA to Knoxville, TN. It's 3 hours from Atlanta, GA to Sweetwater, TN. If you stopped at Williamson's you may be ready for more BBQ when you reach Sweetwater, TN. Bradley's BBQ in Sweetwater, TN may be the best BBQ between Atlanta and Knoxville. Get off I 75 at Exit 60 in Sweetwater, TN and go E about a mile to Bradley's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner serving outstanding BBQ.

Eat lightly at Williamson's and enjoy more good BBQ @ Bradley's.

        Bradley's Pit BBQ @ 517 New Highway 68, Sweetwater, TN 423 - 351 - 7190.

        1. If you don't know east Tennessee, I would suggest avoiding the interstate and taking the 'back' road that takes off from the interstate north of the Atlanta 'burbs, and hugs the foot of the mountains all the way to Knoxville.
US411 is a beautiful peaceful road that is four lane in part and two lane in part.
We take it often and have stopped at most of the BBQ places (most county seats have at least two.)
In addition, by taking 411, Benton Ham, just outside of Madisonville TN makes great pork products if you need to take presents to friends or for yourself.

The Interstate Route is a tad faster, even though it's longer mileage wise.

          1. Check out Southern Smokehouse at Exit 25 off I 75 in Cleveland, TN. Jordan's is also outstanding. At Exit 27.

            Southern Smokehouse @ 1705 Stuart Avenue Northwest, Cleveland, TN 423 - 473 - 0620. I7
            http://www.southernsmokehousebbq.com/

            Jordan's BBQ @ 910 Stuart Rd NE, Cleveland, TN. 423 - 478 - 2171.

Pull in at Exit 378 W of Knoxville, TN on I 40/75 to Famous Dave's for good BBQ.

            Famous Dave's BBQ @ 208 Advantage Place, Knoxville, TN 865 - 694 - 9990.

              1. When you get to Chattanooga get off at I-24 and head west to US 72 and head south to South Pittsburg, Tn. Home of Lodge Mfg. The cast iron people and there's a factory store.
In S. Pitt is the Dixie Freeze. A very good meat n 3/drive in.

BTW if you stop off at the visitors center you can get coupons for the Lodge store.

                1. re: Davwud

If you take Davwud's detour, you might be of a certain age that remembers (vaguely) when the National Geographic featured Russell Cave one year. I remember it from way back when and it's not all that far from Pittsburg. Sadly, I don't think there are any interesting restaurants along the roads there; I remember getting and staying hungry when we did the detour.
What is recommended at the Dixie Freeze? It's on the way to our boat.

I loved the Dagwood. A BLT on top of a Double Cheese Burger.

They have a specials board as well. Their fried stuff (catfish, chicken, chicken fried steak) is really good too. Everything we've had from there has been great.
If you're a facebook friend they post their menu on your feeds page. Here's an example.

                2. We drove US 411 north from metro Atlanta a week ago today rather than take the interstate to Knoxville. For lunch we stopped at Michael's of Etowah and were pleased with what we had. I chose a bbq pork sandwich with onion rings and sweet tea - which was much tastier than what I feared we might find at a fast food place. I would not hesitate to eat there again if the occasion arose.
