cost to hire chef for small house dinner?

Trying to figure out my 40th B-day -- if its more affordable to take 10-12 friends to a restaurant, or hiring a chef to cook for a private dinner at my house, casual setting on our backyard deck, 3 courses + appetizers and dessert, we'd supply our own wines. Any ideas of approx costs for such a chef service?
thanks!
Colleen

Depending on the type of cuisine, it can be very expensive. Typically, it would be less expensive if you were to go to a restaurant since they have purchasing power to buy better product at lower costs. Depending on what you wanted to serve, type of protein (quality, amount, freshness, organic, etc.) and the method in cooking which could be a bigger hassle then you would want to endure.

We hired a very good private cook for $350.00 plus food cost, She was very qualified and knew how to interact with all involved.
