Cocktails/food/casual/quiet

elchinoloco2 Aug 11, 2010 08:59 PM

I've searched the boards but am looking for a little more of a refined search. It'll be this Sunday, around 7. I thank you all for your suggestions of Rye House for the last inquiry but it was a bit loud for my tastes. Damn good food and drinks though. Maybe not a first date spot, so that's that.

Now, specifics: she appreciates a good martini, I like good beer. Food that is detrimental to conversation but still tasty. you know, maybe not too spicy or garlicky. Not too upscale. If it's not too hot I'll be in jeans and a shirt without silly words on it. Location? Flatiron and south. I can get there on a subway and so can she.

thanks for any help ahead of time!

<Food that is detrimental to conversation>

You want the food to negatively impact the conversation? I guess maybe peanut butter could do that. Or maybe you left out a word.

Temple Bar makes a great martini and has a good beer selection, although the food is just okay. It's a bit more casual than Pegu Club, and very quiet.

I had a bad incident where the food start insulting the color top my date was wearing. Very awful. I prefer my food much better behaved. =D

Are there any restaurants you'd recommend near this Temple Bar? Again, no uppity or illmannered food.

There are tons, and you can search the board for Noho recommendations. The ones I've been to all fall short of your specifications in one way or another. Chinatown Brasserie might be too fancy and expensive, but the food there is very refined. It might snicker behind your date's back, but it would never be so crass as to mock her to her face. The food at Mercat is very good, but it's garlicky, and it gets loud in there. I haven't been to Five Points in a decade, so while I loved it then, it may have gone downhill. Scope around for reviews of Elizabeth or Caffe Falai - one of them might work well for you.

Mucho gracias, small h! I will do a bit more searching.

Maybe Pegu Club at the bar?

Pegu Club on the early side is pretty chill and casual -- I've definitely seen other patrons there in jeans and t-shirt around 6pm or so. And some first dates at the bar as well. The food is excellent and I find that cocktail joints really don't serve super spicy/garlicky food because it messes with your palate. Don't miss the deviled eggs or the coconut-kaffir lime fizz at Pegu Club. Beer-wise, not sure what they have, though.

Yeah Pegu Club is a totally different place early. I remember one week going early and enjoying the quiet conversation with my wife and with the bartender and then trying to go again later the same week at 12 or so and had to wait in a big line of models to get in. : ) Oh well.
