San Fran/Napa vs. The Riviera fight

My husband and I are food and wine junkies who are about to celebrate our ten year anniversary. We have done several wine trips in Europe, i.e., Bordeaux, Montalcino, Montipulciano, etc., and we love their food and culture. However, we have never been to California and the two of us are at odds about going to the French and Italian Riviera or going to experience the best of California. Personally, I want to go to the French Laundry.. been dreaming of that since before I met him! Can anyone help me come up with a "he cannot miss it" itinerary in October for 7 nights? The travel agents/wine tour people obviously have a vested interest and my man is picky and detail oriented (any other engineers our there?) Help me get to California and do it right, please! Thanks.

Perhaps you should see if you can get a reservation at The French Laundry first.

It's comparatively easy to come up with a week's worth of great places to eat in Northern California.

Good point. Note that French Laundry is taking reservations *now* for October: they take reservations for each date exactly two months in advance, starting at 10 a.m. PT so, for example, today they were taking reservations for October 12. Note also that the lunch menu and the dinner menu are the same (and the same price); many people prefer the lunch experience, and reservations may be slightly easier to get.
