Farmer's Cheese in Seattle?

betsameister Aug 11, 2010 07:38 AM

My sister and I are trying to re-create our grandmother's burek recipe from the former Yugoslav. Does anyone know where we could buy a simple farmer's cheese in the Seattle area? Preferably somewhere between the Central District and Greenwood. And we need to make ALOT of it, so somewhere we could buy in bulk would be awesome. Thanks for the help!

I've seen Farmer's Cheese at Whole Foods, Ballard Market and I think PCC-Greenlake, but not in bulk quantities.

I have seen farmer's cheese at DeLaurenti in Pike Place Market, but haven't tried it.

I've never tried burek either, however I can tell you that I went on a similar odyssey when I was trying to find something similar to Lipto, a Hungarian farmer's cheese used to make a savory spread I grew up on. The closest thing I found, and which worked very well, was Bulgarian sheep's milk feta. I found this at Big John's PFI at the south end of the International District. It is much softer & less crumbly than Greek or other feta cheese.
