Need good restaurant for San Luis Obispo

EclecticEater Aug 10, 2010 08:16 PM

My wife and I and three friends will be in San Luis Obispo area to attend a wedding at Avila Beach. We'd like to have dinner on Friday August 20th at a nice place (we all appreciate good food of any type) in SLO that isn't too expensive. All suggestions and comments are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for...Apple Farm Restaurant at the Apple Farm Inn.

Personally I'd go down to Jocko's in Nipomo (15-20 minutes south of SLO on 101 for some great Central Coast BBQ. Make sure you have reservations.

IPersonally, would not rec the Apple Farm, as there is so much else that isn't so...ordinary. Del Monte Cafe does this type of comfort food so much better. A local favorite for 30+ years. Desserts are better, too.

Bear in mind that the whole area is a tourist destination--reservations are necessary, but even then you can wait.

Jaffa Cafe, Petra Mediterraean Cafe and Bon Temps Creole Cafe in SLO are interesting, have good service and are reasonable.

Jocko's is a solid 30 minutes from AF at 70 mph+. Did the commute for 10 years, so if you go, add that extra 10.

Doc Bernstein's ice cream parlor in the village of Arroyo Grande--30 seconds from the freeway at Grand Ave exit--is fun, the super-premium ice cream is delicious and there's a tv with movies for the kids in the back room, where you can also watch ice cream being made.

Avila Valley Barn is a nice diversion at the Avila Beach Rd exit just north of Pismo Beach. Fruit stand, cider, berries, homemade baked goods (pies, coblers, cookies) petting zoo and run-around room for kids. Open 7 days, weekends it can be crowded.

      Bon Temps Creole Cafe
1000 Olive St, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405

      Avila Valley Barn
560 Avila Beach Dr, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405

Believe it or not, the Copper Cafe at the Madonna Inn has good food, even with its goofy, over the top decor. (Check out its website) It has a nice festive feel for an after the wedding crowd. And if you haven't been there at least once, this is worth at least one experience to see this eccentric but well-loved place. It is one of a kind road art from a by gone era, but still very graciously and competently maintained.

There are also good reports about Margies Diner on 101 nearby too for a more casual place.

As much as I didn't want to like it- Sycamore Springs Resort has a fantastic restaurant! AWESOME burgers- quail to die for- excellent eggplant spinach appetizer- great cocktails and if you buy a local wine while touring around- no corkage. Nice staff and above average food.
Avila also has Petes Pierside- great dive on the Port San Luis Pier- not fance but DAMN good food- the crab enchiladas will curl your toes. Worth the walk out on the pier!!!!
        Bring a jacket - we've had a chilly summer!!

Is it still called Gardens of Avila? Good to hear it's back, took a bit of a downhill slide a couple of years ago when the chef left (blanking on his name).

we stayed at the Sycamore Springs resort- not sure of the name of the restaurant..I was not into eatting there- but we had coupons due to us staying there...IT WAS GREAT! We ate there 2 nights in a row. I was impressed with the food and nothing our 4 top ordered was lacking in flavor/ presentation or quality! We live 45 minutes away and I would be thrilled if my husband offered to take me! HINT HINT honey.

Here is a link to the guided trail you can hike from Avila- a must do if you have the time and desire!!!!!

Evan Treadwell--he left to start and run the restaurant at Dolphin Bay in Shell beach.

Recently took a walk out on this Port San Luis pier - and it is something rugged to love, with barking sea lions in easy view as well. There is some parking on the pier and a fish market too. Glad to hear the food is good as the place did not look all that busy this last week but the crowds were out. Worth a trip back to explore it some more. It is a great destination. Thanks for the food report.

I've been a fan of Pete's since the old days along front street in Avila. That said, my last few lunches there have been middling. Fish and Chips okay, but the newer canopy over the deck creates a dark and cool atmosphere, the flies are out of control, and the seating needs to be improved. It has slipped down since Pete sold it.

So has anyone been to Pete's in the last 9 months. Heading to Avila Beach over memorial weekend and want to know if this should stay on the list
