What I Like about the New Site 8/10/2010

OK Everyone to be Fair

Let people who like the new site give some positive feedback to things they like.

Let's see what people come up with.

The programmers and Jacquillyne would probably like to hear a few positives.

  1. Click to Upload a photo (10 MB limit)
    1. The readability on the mobile site is significantly improved.

Mobile on my iPhone4 is very snappy compared to the previous version of software.

      2. The Chow front page is quite attractive and laid out in an appealing, easy to navigate way. (Er, the slideshow needs a stop button for those of us apparently prone to laptop-sickness. But still, it's attractive.)

I agree with this...when i first got to Chow, i thought, this looks pretty cool. Then i made my way to chowhound and was quite disappointed. So first impressions of just the overall appearance was chow = good, chowhound = not good

          1. re: iluvtennis

Ditto. But I love the new 'Choose a Board' feature, especially since all my favourite boards are on the immediatly visible portion. The previous version was so annoying, I'd always have my mouse hover over and then it would close up on me.

        2. The programmers and designers deserve to hear the (albeit harsh) truth: you should find a new profession.

All these problems simply should not happen its obvious that no beta testing was done.

          1. re: kpaxonite

Sorry, kpaxonite, but it seems that some beta was done as some of these wonderful CH's will attest to, but maybe the designers/programmers either missed their responses or decided to ignore them. If you look through several of the other posts on "site talk" on this subject, beta testers have posted to the fact. Anyway - there are things I don't like and some I do (but still need tweaking).

          2. I like the *concept* of the "saved boards". Unfortunately they didn't bother to get it working correctly before rolling this thing out.

I haven't found anything else that I like. But then again, being here amongst the vast whiteness is giving me a headache. So maybe I'll spend more time later checking out, say, the new search feature.

            1. I like the design at the bottom of the page--you get the newest discussions (Site board discussions) and other places to investigate (stories, videos, etc.), all nicely legible, good color contrast, good font size.

The OP font size is nice and I think that would be a good layout to leave, for the OP.

I totally agree - so much nicer! Thank you very much for what must have been a lot of work!

              2. I like the redesign a lot. All the red on the old one was very distracting/offputting to me. I don't mind readjusting the contrast or brightness of my screen when I navigate between websites. As the changes are in transition, I think it will just take a bit of time to adjust. Man, we CHs seem harsh! you would think someone took your puppy and had it neutered and tie dyed.

I don't think I've ever seen a new board release that didn't get complaints. Creatures of habit.

                  1. re: toutefrite

I would say its more like they spilt bleach all over the puppy lol

                  2. I like that one click on the "Discussions" instantly take you to recent posts. Saves one step for me.

                    1. re: Quine

So is the "discussion" button like what the old "hot posts" used to be? If so, then I like it too. :)

                      1. re: Quine

Thanks--I was wondering how to get there.

                        1. re: rworange

I was trying to figure out how to get to the newest discussion page, the one you're on when you first enter the site. "Discussions" gets me there. I never used the old hot posts but I probably should have investigated it. Too late.

                      2. The Saved Boards feature makes it much easier to switch from board to board on my iPad. Also, the spacing/padding issues, while visually disconcerting, makes it easier to hit the correct link in my iPad (fat fingers).

                        1. I like the saved boards feature - I haven't had any of the problems others have (i use Safari so maybe it works better in some browsers rather than others).

I also like that when I click on take me to Chowhound that a list of the most recently active posts shows up. This saves a bit of clicking between screens when I'm in serious procrastination mode.

Um - maybe I've just missed this and not paid much attention, but where is the "My Chow"?

Upper right, in the red. Username/ (view profile).

                          2. I also like the SAVED BOARDS feature.

                            1. Okay, the search feature on an individaul board was really hard to find, but when i found it, it did seem to give me much better, more relevant results.

I think i might actually like the larger font of the responses (the initial posts still show up as a tiny, hard to read font for me), but i think i would rather have a different type of font. The size is good, but it is too light or something...a little too hard to read. I know you can't please everyone, but if the font were just a little more readable...

                              1. And save board feature...really, really love this.

yeah, just don't save more than about 8 boards. If you do, you'll see what I and others have been writing about (above and on other threads). Supposedly it's a bug that will be fixed. Once it's fixed, I'll be all about the love for the "saved boards" as well.

                                    1. re: iluvtennis

This is definitely a +. I like having them quickly available vs. having to search and destroy through the big pop-down menu of all of the boards.

                                      1. re: iluvtennis

Agreed, that's a REALLY nice addition. I also like the easy toggle b/w Chow and Chowhound. Though the layout is still a pain, I hope that as I spend more time here, more of these ease-of-use features appear!

                                      2. On your individual page, the sort by newest post or your most recent post is a good one.

                                          1. I think the new site is more attractive and typographically elegant. Unfortunately these qualities come at the expense of usability. The grey borders around each box and the generous use of whitespace create a relaxed, uncluttered appearance, but the price of this is having to scroll more and cognitively work harder.

My imagination or am I scrolling three times as much?

Is it possible to get carpal tunnel syndrome from too much scrolling????

                                              1. re: monku

Unfortunately the old site isn't available for comparison (or is it?), but it seems to me to require approximately twice as much scrolling (i.e., it occupies double the real estate for a typical partially expanded thread). I reduced my font size, which helps a little, but now the avatars are puny and difficult to distinguish, and I'm still scrolling around 50% more than with the previous site.

                                                1. re: monku

Unexpanded replies seem to be the biggest problem. They have the full complement of wide border and whitespace, with no content. And now there's even whitespace _between_ unexpanded comments.

                                                  1. re: monku

The amount of white space was addressed in another thread. TPTB are going to tighten up the kerning so there's not SO much free space around posts that are collapsed as well as those that are open.

                                                2. I really like the new iPhone optimized site, and I'm so happy to be able to post this from it. Very nice!

Yes and the thread is no longer paginated, so no more wheel to change pages. This also takes care of the problems posted about the past mobile iterations, read only, etc.. If they bridge the moat that now separates chow and chowhound, that will go a long way to solving problems. I like the new look -- the place needed redecoration and a paint job -- even at the cost of more scrolling.

                                                  2. So far, I like the new site. It seems fairly intuitive and I'm still figuring things out, but I don't seem to have most of the problems other people are yelling about on the other thread. Well, UNLESS I use Internet Explorer, but my version of IE and Chow/Chowhound haven't' been compatible since the last site "improvements."

Not to sound too geeky or anything, but it seems to me that more than a few of the problems some are yelling about are due to the way they have their computers set up, such as what their default font is in their control panel (don't know a damned thing about Macs) or the brightness level on their monitor.

Under the old system, I used the red color scheme, not the tan, and haven't bothered investigating whether that option is still with us, but I have to wonder whether all of the problems with having difficulty reading things on a colored bg may not have to do with that?

I'm still trying to figure out what the "Unread Posts" category has to do with anything on my profile page? It just seems to be another version of My Posts and My Reading List. But time will tell...

                                                      > some are yelling about are due to the way they have
                                                      > their computers set up, such as what their default font

In my case, I've reduced the font size. Unfortunately this does not significantly reduce the amount of whitespace or the width of borders around posts and replies. It's not something that's amenable to a simple configuration change.

                                                      > I have to wonder whether all of the problems with having
                                                      > difficulty reading things on a colored bg

That's not an issue for me.

Note: I'm using both Firefox and Chrome as browsers.

Unread Posts is the new name for Hot Posts (which was actually called something else in the previous design iterations, but I forget what; Hot Posts was the orig. name way, way back), which wasn't accessible via the profile page before. It shows all the newest posts on the site or on a specific board you choose since the last time you visited/refreshed it.

                                                      2. I really, really like it.

It's clean, modern, easy to read, easy to personalize. I hated the last re-design but this one is a winner.

                                                        1. I love it.

As with any change, I'm slogging around a bit.

However, I can see that this version is an improvement.

                                                          Congrats, ChowTeam!

                                                          1. I like the way the default sort order for search results is now by BEST MATCH.

And I don't mind that they changed the name of the sort from the former "Relevance".

                                                            1. If they would just use a condensed font, it would help SCADS.

                                                              1. It seems as if the really long threads are loading much more quickly - yay. I'm noticing this especially on the 287-response "I hate the new release" thread, ironically!

So far the few things I've tried on the new search feature have worked really well. It's still not intuitive to get to the advanced search area but now that I know how, I can find it. The returns it's generating seem to really help. And I like the added "in the title" and "user name" boxes to search by.

                                                                1. Huh? Was there a question?

                                                                      1. Thanks, Chow People, for tightening up all the dead space around posts. It's taking up much less room so it's easier to scroll. Good fix.

                                                                        1. Kudos, Chow Folks for not only tightening up the white space, but also for the font correction. It is very much appreciated!!!!!

                                                                          1. Opening multiple windows on my Ipod Touch doesn't cause it to crash as much as it used to.

                                                                            1. I noticed two improvements with the new release.

Previously, when you displayed search results, you could not open new tabs for each result by right-mouse-clicking on the search result. Now you can.

Also I noticed that when you change the sort order of search results - for example, from BEST MATCH to Newest First - it takes just a second or two, whereas it used to require as long a wait as when you did the search from start.

                                                                              Thanks, Chowhound Team!
