Becker Lane pork - Berkeley Bowl

Purchased some pork steaks (from pork butt) very recently. The prepared dish (simmered with soy sauce etc.) was somewhat ruined by the pronounced freezer/refrigerated taste of the meat. Have bought this cut before and it often tastes a little gamey to me, although my son prefers it. I think I may stick to the Becker regular chops, or switch back to Niman. Is this more of a BB problem, or a BL problem?

      And yesterday I saw huge BL chops at the Rouge meat counter.

      Becker Lane pork is tops. I haven't noticed any refrigerated taste from what we've bought at the Bowl and I don't believe it's ever frozen.

        I've had some less than stellar experiences with pork and meat I purchased from BB where it tasted a little stale. For example, I've noticed a big difference in appearance and taste between Marin Sun Farms meat sold at BB and in Market Hall in Oakland. At Marin Sun Farms in Market Hall it's very fresh since it's direct from the purveyor. However, at BB, unless you go the day it's delivered, it's not as fresh.

          Thanks for your reply! I'm a BB fan, but generally did not buy meat there (altho I do buy fish) until we noticed the Becker Lane products. Now that Market Hall's new Marin Sun shop sells BL [and their own?] I'll switch to them.

            I once purchased some bad sardines from BB and now will only buy from Tokyo FIsh or Monterey.
            Marin Sun in Market Hall is indeed a godsend, a great alternative to both BB and VerBrugge.

              Yeah, I don't really like the quality of the meat and fish at BB either. I once bought some scallops and they never browned! They just threw off a lot of water. How about the meat at the market inside Cafe Rouge? Or Magnani?

                I always steer very clear of the meat and fish dept at BB because of the smell. Too bad, since I love the produce dept.
