Annapolis Royal and Environs

We love Annapolis Royal and like to visit a couple of times each summer and fall, but while it used to have a couple of good restaurants, it's barren now. We've done the Mozart(?) place and the Streetside, but weren't very happy with either. Ditto the Garrison House Inn (I can't remember the particulars there, but I wasn't impressed, particularly given the bill). The German Bakery is good, but not for dinner.

Since we rarely spend the night, we're happy to visit any of the surrounding towns for a good meal on the way home.

Are there hidden treasures nearby that only locals know of? Please, do tell.

If you're heading west down the Valley, don't forget Pearl's in Paradise for fried clams and great burgers. A true summer roadside gem...

It's on the old highway more near Laurencetown.

Second the Port Pub, it's really great.

The Streetside Cafe is called Bistro East now, under new ownership, and is much better. They are just through a pretty extensive renovation so it's a nice place to have a meal and a couple of drinks. Service can be slow, as you may expect from a new place, so keep that in mind if you see a lot of bodies in the window. I get their pizza often.

The restaurant I like best is called the Sweet Secret, just outside of Annapolis on Highway 1 towards Bridgetown. The owners are Eastern European and they do a great schnitzel there.

If you don't mind travelling a little further out there's Chez Cristophe on the French Shore, past Digby and towards Yarmouth. It's the best seafood in the area. Heading in the other direction, there's Tempest in Wolfville and The Port Pub in Port Williams, if you want something a little more casual. If you enjoy beer, the microbrewery at the Port is excellent.
