Wheatleigh Dining

Early this fall I will be in Lenox for a long weekend (4 nights). Is it worth dining at the Wheatleigh? I will not mind the steep price (compared to other area restaurants that receive good reviews on this Board) if the meal warrants it. If I am merely paying for ambience I would prefer to eat elsewhere. Thank you in advance for your thoughts based on recent experience.
Other places under consideration:
Alta
Old Inn on the Green
Rouge
Nudel
Mezze
Dreamaway Lodge (nostalgic)

IMHO you pay for the experience of eating at Wheatleigh. Your list sounds wonderful, some of my favorites. My SO and I went to Alta recently, wonderful meal. Nudel can be a little hit or miss, one of the downsides to an ever changing menu. They do post their menus online every day though. OIOTG, is owned and operated by Peter Platt who was the head chef at Wheatleigh for many years and is one of my favorites fore a romantic dinner. Good luck!!

New Mezze did not disappoint. Had a fine dinner there going straight from the Clark; in the old house that used to be Jae's Spice, on Route 7.

Old Inn on the Green is absolutely WONDERFUL. That said, if you are going the Relais and Chateau route, you would be better served going to Blantyre...yes, you DO have to bring the gross domestic product to pay for it, but, you know that going in. It is a special treat...we do it once a year...and, despite the expense, it is absolute value for what you DO pay.

Thanks for your input. I have eaten, and lodged, at the Blantyre, and it was very nice. Given the strong recommendations I am reading about some of the other places, however, I wanted to try something different this year. Both Alta and OIOG appear to be consistently highly rated.

Good to hear the new Mezze is on target. Maybe will try on Thursday. And am waiting for their "locals" specials they keep promising after the tourists are gone.

I am not able to comment on Wheatleigh (never been) but you can't really go wrong with your list. OId Inn is fantastic. Rouge is very good, if you go there would sit in the bar area as for some reason they won't let you order off the tapas menu in the main dining area.

Dream Away is more about the atmosphere than food but that said the food is respectable and the place certainly unique. Nudel I agree is variable but can be very good. Alta is a step above other similar Lenox restaurants.

Rouge is my favorite Berkshire restaurant. By the way, you can get the bar & tapas menu in the 2 new rooms to the right of the bar too. A nice relaxed, dress down alternative to Wheatleigh.

I think Wheatleigh is too pretentious to be fun.

              I agree completely with magiesmom.
              Once was enough for us.
Cold, sterile atmosphere combined with truly oustanding food and excellent service wasn't enough to bring us back.
              No ambiance but good food.
There are too many other good choices out there;Rouge,Chez Nous,Old Inn on the Green,ect........

We are back and I wanted to give an update based on our experience. For lunch on Thursday we ate at Alta. Food was simple but excellent, service was pleasant. We ate at Nudel on Thursday night, the food was excellent but the room was very crowded and the waitstaff could most generously be described as very pressed---not gracious just food placed on the table. On Friday we ate at Wheatleigh, in the less formal Library Room. Food was excellent but wait staff was incompetent. We were going to eat in the Wheatleigh formal Dining Room the next night but because we expereinced incompetent wait service at breakfast as well, we decided to try the Old Inn on the Green for Saturday dinner. A mistake. Though the food was good, the ambience was awful. I am not sure why it bothers to use candlelight. The noise, and constant commotion from wait staff and patrons makes this a very unpleasant place for a couple to dine. The ambience has no more appeal than a fast food restaurant. On the way back to the City on Sunday we stopped at Rudi's for an excellent quick sandwich and coffee for lunch.
