Chinese Restaurant for Rehearsal Dinner

I'm looking for suggestions on Chinese restaurants for purposes of our rehearsal dinner. We'd love to find a place that will satisfy my Chinese parents desire for authenticity, but also has appropriate decor for the occasion. Future in-laws are American so in addition to authentic options, Americanized Chinese menu options are a must. We expect 10-15 people in the party and prefer locations in Manhattan.

Thanks in advance!

Most among the party will be comfortable ordering from both the Chinese and non-Chinese menu, but there are several people who will be more comfortable ordering from the typical Chinese-American menu. We would like to accommodate them as well.

Is Joe's Shanghai in Midtown nice enough decor for you? The food is accessible yet very good. I can't really comment on how "authentic" it is. Seems more Americanized than authentic, but it meets some of your guidelines.

The Midtown Joe's does not have good food. It's a very bad version of what can be found in Chinatown which I don't think is that great either.

I agree that Joe's Midtown is not the best ever, but I think it''s a possibility. Did you have a suggestion for the original poster?

I've never actually been to it, but based on what I've read on this board over the past few years, a decent mix of "authentic" and "safe" in a "nice" setting might be Chinatown Brasserie, if price isn't too much of an issue.

Chinatown Brasserie is wonderful. A great suggestion and should please both sets of parents.

Tang Pavilion on 55th between 5th and 6th is attractive and quiet inside and has very good Shanghainese as well as Americanized dishes. South China Garden is a very good restaurant but hardly a wedding rehearsal dinner setting.

Why Chinese food at all then? As you well know, Chinese eat communally - there is no "I am ordering this dish for me to eat on my own and you can't have any" premise. In my understanding the rehearsal dinner is also known as the Grooms' Dinner, where the parents of the groom are hosts. The bride and her parents select the wedding meal with input from the groom, the groom's parents select the meal for the rehearsal dinner. Chinatown Brasserie as Mike G mentioned is the place to go.
