"Eat Pray Love" idea and recipe

Elizabeth Gilbert author of best seller "Eat. Pray. Love" say: "Italians take every ingredient they know and make a feast of it. That’s a lesson for the rest of us: make the time to notice what you’re eating".

We are (my mother and me) very proud for and I'd like to present you some recipes inspired by this movie (I hope this is the right place).

This is our Volcano Gelato, can I add the recipe?
Best,
Patrizia&Silvia

The wait is over! EAT PRAY LOVE is in theaters Today. (In Italy, I'll see the movie in september)
If someone of you see the movie, could you tell me more about gelato, pomarola e "dolce far niente"?

    1. silvia_italy Aug 9, 2010 06:24 AM

Pomarola da Film (Pomarola for movie). Here the recipe, step by step.
½ kg San Marzano tomatoes, 1 small chopped onion of Tropea, 1 carrot, 1 celery, basil, parsley.
Fry the onion with extra virgin olive oil, then add celery, carrot, parsley and basil. Continue to cook slowly for 5 minutes the ingredients and then add the tomatoes, salt and pepper. Boil on high heat for half an hour and then wipe it with a masher.
      An idea more
Besides spaghetti could prepare small Bavarian adding 2 leaves of gelatine. Using the silicone mold make you some nice flowers pomarola be served on crostini

Un dolce per il "dolce far niente" that means a pie for "sweetness of doing nothing" and here you can see a clip where Julia and Elisabeth explain what it means.

Here my last recipe and photos inspired by the movie and tuscany tradition.

              Rosemary pies
              Ingredients
250 g butter softened, 200 sugar cane, 3 large eggs, 300 grams of flour and 2 teaspoons of yeast, one teaspoon vanilla extract 4 tablespoons of milk or more, 55gr of raisins, 2 sprigs of needles chopped rosemary 10 cm but not too fine, 1 or 2 tablespoons of unrefined sugar cane.

              Directions
Preheat oven to 170 degrees. Work the butter and sugar together until mixture is clear, smooth and soft. Combine the eggs one at a time incorporating a spoon after each addition of flour and then combine the vanilla. Incorporating the remaining flour and then the rosemary, and raisins. Dilute the mixture with milk, to obtain a soft and smooth. Before you pour into the mold, sprinkle with sugar cane cutters. Bake for about 40-45 minutes. Cool completely and sprinkle lightly with icing sugar.

Ciao Regina, here the recipes, but why don't you like the book? I'm interesting in a US citizen opinion. For us in Italy it's like a commercial for our country, so ... we love it very much :-)

                Strawberries ice-crem

                Required time (in minutes): 120
Ingredients (serves 4): 200 g strawberries, 150 g sugar, 1 egg, 100 ml cream, 150 ml of milk, 1 vanilla pod, 1 piece of lemon peel.
Preparation: Heat the milk with the vanilla pod and lemon peel, just reaches a boil moved from heat and let cool. Peel, wash the strawberries and shake. Whip the egg and sugar until the mixture appears light and fluffy. Stir in strawberries, milk and cream filtered. Do coagulate strawberry ice cream in ice cream maker, following instructions

Put in the Volcano silicon molde (I find it also in a USA online store) and fridge for 2 hours, than add the lemon taste ice-cream.

                Lemon ice-cream

                Ingredients:150 gr sugar
                200 g semi-skimmed milk
                250 grams fresh cream
juice of 3 lemons about 120 grams. (When I find organic lemons also join the peel of 1.)Squeeze the lemon juice and filter.
With mixer blend sugar, juice and milk.
Let rest in refrigerator for 15 minutes.
Then again pour into ice cream maker and add the cream

Ooh, sounds very delicious. I don't own those volcano molds, but your recipe might tempt me to get one!

As far as the book, well, I love Italy and the food of Italy already, so no worries there, I don't need to read the book to develop an appreciation for your country. But, I found the book very pretentious and condescending. Honestly, I tried 4-5 different times to read it, including as a book on tape, and just couldn't get past the awful first several chapters. Maybe the rest of the book is better. Maybe I should have started in the middle. :).

ice- cream recipe it's the first time we use but in the past we did a lot of dessert with the raspberry sauce. Her the ingredients: raspberry, sugar, and orange liqueur like Cointreau. Put all in a littel bowl and let them boil, then mix and strain through a colander.

Are there worthwhile recipes in the book? The first time I heard the title I assumed it would be about a self-absorbed, self-pitying woman's journey of discovery (which left her just as egocentric as before, or she wouldn't have written the book), a made-for-Oprah waste of trees. I understand that it provided O with more Opr-ah-hah moments, but I find Opriphanies tiresome, so have no desire to see the film, either. Saw the author on some other show, flogging her latest book, and have to say that she was just as my hermudgeonly self pictured her.

Ah, too bad there are no recipes. Otherwise, I'd get to employ the new word I learned from the NY Times book review: foodoir.

Anyway, the book was given to me by a dear friend who has traveled to all of the countries in the book. She's not at all a food lover, alas, and her tastes in books run heavily sentimental. I really wanted to like it, but just couldn't even start it, let alone finish it.

But, if it inspires people like silvia to share their wonderful recipes with us, there's something good to be said for it!

Absolutely hated Eat, Pray, Love. One of the worst books I have read in a long time! I can't believe they made a movie about it....

I had another friend who said the same damn thing, but, unfortunately, is one of those people who doesn't 'keep' books . . . and so it landed in my lap. It's around here somewhere in the stacks.

One of my favorite things about Chowhound is that it is a collection of foodies AND book snobs. Back in the dark ages when I was dating, I would ask a guy what he liked to read and if I didn't like the answer, wouldn't go out with him -- saved a lot of dull evenings. Of course, I'm now married to a writer.

And I join you in thanking Silvia for these beautiful posts, which I suspect are far more inspiring than the book or movie!

Those do look beautiful. I think the volcano ones look special but I do have heart shaped ones that might work...

I agree about the book. I couldn't get past the first few chapters. I felt like telling her to stop whining about her life and do some volunteer work to see how lucky she has it. And, finding "marvelous" somewhere? Try your own backyard. It's more about opening your eyes to the wonders around you, no matter where you are. Maybe if we started in the middle, we'll see her past the whining? LOL, hey, we all discovered the importance of appreciating ingredients and making the most of them right here on Chowhound! I sooo want to go to Italy, though.

Sure, the heart shaped ones could be perfect!

                                            no it gets progressively worse

I agree. It gets progressively worse to the point that you are rolling your eyes at just about every sentence. Italy was the "best" section soley for the food descriptions.

@ Silvia italy - thanks for the pictures and recipes. Beautiful work.
