Help me find a birthday steak for non-steakhouse prices?

I want to take my hubby out for a great b'day dinner, and to him, that's steak. However, this particular year we're making big purchases elsewhere, and I'd like the keep the bill closer to $100 than the $200+ at a steakhouse.

Preferably with a filet option on the menu. Preferably in Manhattan. Does not have to be a steakhouse.

Something like...Buenos Aires, but we've already been there. And maybe with a tiny bit more atmosphere.

Thanks in advance!!

Looks like a perfect fit - thank you!

Azul is great. Ate there a few weeks ago. It is small with scattered service but the skirt steak was excellent. I dont remember a Filet though. I also think wine only, no booze.

Great, thanks! Mmmm steak n' wine.

      2. Not such a fan of Azul. I found nearly everything overcooked - and the fact that it comes out on a sizzling platter didn't help much.

I'd go for Les Halles, probably. Very good prices - no it's not Keen's or Luger's quality, but it's good for its price range.

That said, it's hard to say w/o knowing how many drinks you'd usually consume. Two glasses of wine each could easily be half of your $100 right there.

        1. I like the steak at Balthazar.

And where should I go for a casual drink beforehand? Thanks!

          1. Landmarc in Tribeca? Definitely better atmosphere and a good selection of steaks with good fries.

Second Landmarc in Tribeca. There's a location in TWC as well but I prefer Tribeca location. Good steak and a few good non-steak options as well.

            2. Azul prettymuch sucked.

The empenadas were the highlight - delicious, but tiny. The Octopus appetizer was fine. The steak was SINFULLY overcooked. My chicken was just okay. The bread did rock, it must've been toasted somehow...

We were the ONLY diners in the restaurant. And the host and waiter clearly did not give a SH*T. They were busy chatting away the whole time and looking at their phones. Omg. The sad part was that when I made the reservation, I made sure to say that it was my husband's birthday (so a nice table or something would be nice) and when I called to confirm day-of I reminded them. So yes, we got our pick of table, but I thought the service would be at least decent with respect to the special occassion (or the fact that we were spending money in their establishment).

They clearly cared not in the least about having customers at all, nor about showing their steak respect with good cooking.

That sounds a lot like my experience there - overcooked meat, indifferent staff. Blech.

Did you, I hope, return the overcooked steak and ask for a new one?

At that point we just wanted to get out of there and get home. I should have. But it would have made my husband's experience worse.

                2. Ricardo Steakhouse on 2nd Ave around 110 St -111 St.

Next year, new rule: fabulous, dedicated steakhouse. Spend less on presents. Happy birthday boy. Thanks all!
