Am looking for a place in the La Jolla/ University City/ UTC area around $20 per person for a group of 10 for a birthday party. Any ideas?

      How casual is Piatti?

standard SD casual. of course some people will get a little more "dressed" if that's their thing, but you'll also see plenty of shorts, t-shirts & flip flops.

      Happy Birthday!

Using your fixed price of 20 per person really tightens the reigns on your choices. With 10 people you are still looking at a good sized bill.

Regarding Piatti or even Alphonso's, I think the host would need to pre-pick the menu choices for the evening.

There are plenty of great pasta choices in the 14.95 - 16.95. A $16.95 dish with tax and tip, 20% tip + 8.5 tax, becomes about $22 per person. That is with out the dolce or soft drinks.

Alfonsos in La Jolla can meet your needs. You could probably reserve an area on their patio and they have a great deal of selections in the 9-13 range and they could probably also do pitchers of soda. You could probably bring your own cake to Alphonso's. You can make a meal out of the chorizo nachos.

      Good Luck.

How is Karl Strauss or is it more of a bar?

everyone i know who has been to Karl Strauss definitely wouldn't tell you to go there for the food. i haven't been there personally, but i trust the opinions/palates of my friends who have, and according to them it's more about the beer, so i don't think it would be appropriate for this group.

            skip Strauss for food.

What about Apollina in Costa Verde? Pretty tasty Greek/Med food. Flaming cheese as a starter (Hallumi cheese) as well as lots of vegetarian choices. They have a nice outside patio.

+1 for Apollonia. Fits your budget perfectly and good food too.

Apollonia looks like the kind of place we were looking for. Thanks.
