Why not a Whole Foods Market in Charlotte?
Good question. I was thinking about this recently. The past few times I've been to the Earthfare in Ballantyne the produce has been wilted and generally unimpressive. I would really like a Whole Foods. I feel like their quality standards are higher.
I was in Tucson a couple of months ago and had the pleasure of strolling through an AJ's Fine Foods and wow, I'd take this grocer over WF, Earthfare, Fresh Market - any of them!
There was supposed to be one built in the Elizabeth area right across from Presbyterian Hospital, but that fell through when plans for the rest of the development fell through. There was supposed to be an entire development with Whole Foods, a movie theater, condos and restaurants. For some reason, everyone jumped ship. Now there's nothing there.
When those plans fell through, Whole Foods was planning to open a store in the South Park area, but with Earth Fare, the Tajma-Teeter, and a Fresh Market all in that area, I guess they felt that there was just too much there already.
I have heard rumors that they are considering opening a store on Charlottetown Ave., where the Target is (underneath the Target where Home Depot used to be). That would be nice. I don't know what the status of that is, however.

The general opinion of folks around Charlotte seems to be that Earth Fare, HT and Fresh Market, as the local high end chains want to keep them out. There is also a funny rumor that the feng shui hasn't been right in any of the considered places around town. I have no basis in fact, but these are what I always hear in the chowhound circles I run in around Charlotte.
There is no love lost between the Earth Fare corporate folks and Whole Foods.
WF just bought Greenlife in Asheville, so that gets them a little closer to Charlotte. Often the new locations opened are decided upon partially from the standpoint of transportation/distribution hubs.
