Mississippi Gulf Coast

Need recommendations for lunch tomorrow and Sunday. Dive, fancy-doesn't matter. Type of food-doesn't matter. Just looking for tasty eats!

  1. What part of the Coast will you be on? There is always Ricky's, Trapani's or the Lunch Box in Bay St Louis- all of them are great, White Cap, Blow Fly Inn (not sure if they are open for lunch though) in Gulfport, just to name a few...

    Blow Fly Inn
    9415 Highway 49, Gulfport, MS 39503

    1. I was there last Aug and had oysters on the half-shell, bbq shirmp and stuffed crab. Both the oysters and shrimp were excellent, the crab was dry with a lot of filler. A few days later, for lunch, our table ordered crab cakes, shrimp scampi, gumbo and something else that was sent back as uneatable. The crab cakes, like the stuffed crab, were dry and mostly filler, gumbo was weak in flavor and barely warm. The shrimp scampi - I think that may be what was sent back - was not buttery, not garlicy and I'm fairly certain was make with frozen shrimp that were rubbery and translucent in color. But the beach front view is great.

I only ate there once, but enjoyed Half Shells Oyster House in downtown Gulfport. Nice menu offerings in an upscale environ.

Please post back as I'll be there mid-Sept and would love some current info.

Ah, I have to second CocoaNut's experience at Blow Fly Inn. Found it to be just pure-dee awful.

Merbel, since you're open to all kinds of experiences, you may also want to view this recent thread on South Mississippi po boys:

How long has it been? I had a bad experience or two when they first reopened, but have gone back several times since then and it has been great! The last time we ate there was over 6 months ago though so who knows...

          1. re: deepfriedkudzu

I can' believe I left off the name of the restaurant where I ate - White Cap.

            1. re: deepfriedkudzu

Uh Kudzu - CocoaNut was talking about White Cap not the Blow Fly Inn. I have never had a bad meal at the Blow Fly Inn. They are always friendly and the food is very good!

Don't sleep on this place is right! I tried to go back there last month and it was GONE.

they have moved to courthouse road next to vintage station. they haven't done a very good job of letting people know though.

            2. Obviously, you have long since dined, but for posters in the future, the Gulf Coast is 28 miles long, and there are several different communities, each with their own style, and cuisine. From Ocean Springs to Bay St. Louis, there are differences. While not quite as bad as saying, "I'm going to NYC, and where do you suggest that I dine," a bit of geography would be very, very helpful, especially as so much has been destroyed with Katrina.
