Alberto's, now in Van Nuys

I believe this is the first Alberto's outside of the Inland Empire, Orange County, and San Diego County. What took them so long? I've been waiting for their California burrito to make it to the LA area forever, now they're here. If you haven't had a California burrito it's got carne asada, french fries, sour cream, and maybe two kinds of cheeses all wrapped into a toasty tortilla; it's heveanly.

It's so new that I don't believe it's even in any of the online directories yet but it's on Vanowen just west of Van Nuys Bl, northwest corner.

  1. With so many Mexican restaurants around, especially in that area, what makes Alberto's so special?

by no means am i an expert on albertos but in college, every friend from san diego was infatuated with albertos. they always claimed they had the best carne asada. it's kind of a wet style of carne asada. i always thought it was tasty but not necessarily drive worthy.

A typical SD-style carne asada burrito is NOT wet i.e. covered in sauce.

The beauty and sheer deliciousness of this type of burrito is solely based on it's simplicity.

A grilled, flour tortilla thoroughly stuffed with marinated carne asada, real guacamole and salsa fresca.

        That's it.

        No beans.
        No rice.
        No lettuce.
        No sour cream.
        No cheese.

it's special because it's socal mexican. no where else will you find the california burrito or the carne asada fries.

Definitely a college thing. LOVED that place when I was going to college in Orange County. However, I've since moved away and I don't think a Alberto exists near where I live anymore.

        3. A couple of my friends - one lives in Diamond Bar and the other in Chino Hills - LOVE Alberto's. There are a couple in El Monte. I have never been, but will probably try soon - maybe tomorrow, since I will be in Van Nuys.

I went late Friday night - right before they closed. I only ordered the rolled tacos (read: taquitos). They were okay. I would much rather head on over to the wonderful taco truck on Friar just west of Van Nuys Blvd (and did!) for their fantastic chorizo and al pastor tacos. They also have a pot of beans that are very good.

          2. Meh. The only thing to get there is the half-order of carne asada fries.

It's definitely "Mexican food" with the quotation marks...

            1. Tried it this weekend. Very good carne asada burrito. The California burrito is good as well, but I wouldn't want french fries in my burrito on a regular basis. The bean & cheese wasn't great; only okay. The Alberto's in Rosemead makes a great B&C, but this one was quite a bit different, and not as good. Carne asada is probably a little better at Van Nuys, though. Prices are slightly higher than the Rosemead location across the board.
