Dinner on Roncey

My SO and I would like to have a casual dinner on Roncey tonight before heading to a movie at the Revue. We would have hit the Silver Spoon in the past, but it's been replaced with the Blue Plate. Anyone been? Any suggestions for an easy, breezy pre-movie dinner would be most appreciated.

  1. FYI...might give you some ideas
"Roncylicious is a month-long celebration of the food culture of Roncesvalles Village. From August 3 to 31 you can enjoy terrific specials at participating restaurants. Also, we’re remembering those less fortunate than us with a month-long food drive - participating businesses will be giving a small discount in exchange for a food donation which will go to local food banks."

Personally I'd go to the Local Kitchen and Wine bar beforehand. It's on Queen basically at the bottom of Roncesvalles.

Don't go the local kitchen, IMO it's really over rated, they are very creative but portion are very small vs. price. The white fish is a two biter and cost $15, everything is over priced.

I love Local Kitchen! And I have always found it to be exceptionally well-priced. I am always shocked at the tininess of the bill. The quality of the food is superb, and yet I never feel I'm forking over what I would anywhere else.

Another good option on Queen at Roncy is Cowbell. It's a bit more expensive, though.

Yeah, gotta agree. No problem with portions or price at the Local. Very happy to have it in the neighbourhood.

order the whitefish next time you go and you'll change your mind

Uhmmm, probably not since I did order it. It was delicious.

I totally agree with you it was delicious very well prepared my issue is what you get for $15

            2. re: Sarah Cat

I think I am half-way between gogomiser and jamesm + Sarah Cat. I really appreciate the quality of the food at Local. The price point is reasonable enough. But the portions have shrunk over time ... I can't say it's my go to for a value meal.

                1. re: Yum2MyTum

Wasn't aware that they had shrunk. Previously I'd not had a problem with the portions. I'll have to go back soon to compare.

                  1. re: jamesm

thanks gogomiser. jamesm, I'd be happily proven wrong. Maybe it was a one (or two) off day... I'll be back soon and will report.

                    1. re: Yum2MyTum

I also hadn't noticed shrunken portions. I was there at the end of March... will have to go back.

          2. Just went last night to Cafe Polonez for takeout of schnitzel and pierogies. It's good stuff, as most people have been saying for years. Loved the minced pork they give you to go with the pierogies. Wish we had more time, we would've tried the wednesday special of potatoe pancakes with goulash.

The construction is annoying as heck though.

There's a new Asian fusion noodle resto (Roncy & Howard Park)?

              1. re: Crispier Crouton

You'll never have a problem with portion size at old Cafe Polonez! :-S

              2. Silver Spoon has been replaced by Lardon and Boho has been replaced by Blue Plate. I Do NOT recommend Blue Plate. I haven't been to Lardon yet. Local Kitchen may be too far from the Revue but it is my choice in the area but doesn't opent til 6pm and if you are headed to an early show may be too tight to get to the theatre given the streetcar track replacement construction on Roncesvalles. You might try Fat Cat Wine Bar or Domani

I wouldn't recommend Fat Cat. It's been a while since I've been, but I wasn't that impressed last time I was there. The flat bread crackers that they served came out of a package that looked suspiciously similar to one I buy at No Frills. The cheese plate was good, though — I'd definitely go back for the cheese. Domani has never blown me away either, but it's definitely decent.

Thank you all for the great recs (and sorry for my long delay in reporting back). We ended up dining at Local Kitchen and had a wonderful meal. My SO had the gnocchi which was fabulous. I had the beet-stuffed ravioli which was also wonderful. It was exactly the kind of resto we were looking for - great food, casual atmosphere and relaxed and friendly service. We will be back - often!

Excellent -- glad to hear you liked it. How did you find the portions?

                      1. re: jamesm

I did find the portions on the small side, but I don't really have a problem with this - especially given how delicious the whole meal was. I forgot to mention that we also had a salad - sweet pea, zucchini and some kind of hard cheese with a lovely lemony dressing. It, too, was utterly delicious.
