Best Italian in Hollywood - affordable

I'm going to Hlwd in a week for a week. Friends their always want to go to the local chain restaurants which drives me bonkers - they think thats the best and most affordable. This time I will get to go to Anthonys Coal Fire. Its probably unfair to already not like it just because it's a chain but I know there are 100s of better options - especially for Italian.
I want to prove to them that you can get good homestyle Italian and not spend a fortune and have a much better meal - and support the local community!
Looking in the area N of 441 between Sheriden and Pines Blvd including Davie.
Thanks hounds
Sue

  1. Liguori's, in Davie, 5810 South University Drive, is good, has a vast menu, and is relatively inexpensive. Della Ventura, 4120 Southwest 64th Avenue, Davie, is probably the best pizza place in Davie. Pizza Loft, 3514 South University Drive, Davie, caters to families and NSU students. Food's good, not great, but they're very accommodating.

Don't discount Anthony's -- though they're a small chain, they are consistently good, and the chicken wings are amazing.

Oh, and 441 runs North and South -- it's hard to find a place 'N of 441!'

Lived in Hlwd for 40 years before I left so am familiar with the area. Should have said west of 441. Just pictured the 441 line and knew I wanted to be on the other side of it!
Have heard their wings are good-unfortunetly I don't do wings....

Not to attempt to sway you, but just so you know, the wings are probably not what you're picturing. They aren't "buffalo" wings.

Here's a New Times article on them. http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/cle...

Yes, only coal oven baked naked wings seasoned with salt and pepper and served with baked sliced onions.

    2. For coal fired pizza, their Paul & Young Ron special is pretty good. They only have pizza, salads, sandwiches, and a few other items like meatballs and eggplant. I would not consider this homestyle Italian food since they do not offer any pasta.

      1. Mazzola's West in Davie is really good. Not a chain. Mom and Pop type place

        1. I second the Liguori's recommendation. Excellent pizza. Capriccio's at Sheridan and University is a little more upscale but I can recommend as well. Also, for something a little different, consider the Beefeater Steakhouse on Hollywood Blvd just west of Young Circle. It's an Argentine steakhouse, very casual and inexpensive (with fabulous chimichurri sauce!) , and has some good pastas and Italian dishes, due to Argentina's large Italian population.

              Yes, don't go there!

              1. re: joeysmom220

Lorenzo's is an 'in the neighborhood' kinda place -- certainly not a destination. They don't have anything you can't find at a number of other places you'll pass on your way there.
