Saturday dinner in Carmel-by-the-sea?

  • 4

Hi -

Heading down to Carmel-by-the-sea for the first time at the weekend, and was hoping to get some recommendations for a special dinner, ideally within (20 minutes?) walking distance of our room near Ocean avenue. We particularly enjoy Italian and French food, but are very flexible on this front.

There appear to be several good restaurants in driving distance, in Carmel Valley, and also south, such as Marinus and Pacific's Edge - happy to consider those if they blow everything else in Carmel out of the water but would prefer to drink rather than have to drive (I suppose taking a taxi is an option).

In Carmel I have seen recommendations for Casanova and l'Auberge, but both have been rather lukewarm. Can anyone recommend somewhere great that I'm missing?

Thanks,
Henry

  1. I think an ideal evening would be cocktails at the Pacific's Edge at the Highlands Inn, about 4 miles south of Carmel. The view is truely amazing as is the lounge. Then go back into Carmel and take the 17 mile drive to Roys at the Inn at Spanish Bay. If you can get there at sunset, there is a bagpipe player you can enjoy while sitting around firepits outside, followed by dinner inside. Save your receipt from the 17 mile entry fee. Roy's will reimburse you.

    1. You're going this coming weekend not the following one, right? Cause the following one is when the Concours de Elegance will be there and it will be a tough time dining without plans already made. Here's of thread of steve h's who WILL be there for the car event. It should give you some ideas.

That's right - I'm going this weekend. Hopefully I'll avoid (mostof) the crowds!

(apologies for late reply - I thought I had replied yesterday but it clearly didn't take...)

      2. Marinus is fantastic. Its been a few years since I've been to Pacific's Edge so I can't really comment but the view is what everyone says it is! l'Auberge is also excellent, too. I've been to Casanova many times. We usually go there for lunch. We'll definitely go back for lunch but our dinner this year in April was truly awful. It is not on the level of Marinus or l'Auberge.
