Long Island's North Fork

We are planning a girls' getaway weekend in the North Fork for the end of September/beginning of October.

We are staying in Greenport for four nights and are taking a trolley wine tour one day where the winery visits will be predetermined. We also have one day where we will be driving and selecting our own winery stops and another day when we will take the ferry over to the South Fork for the day - horseback riding, spa, and Channing Daughters Winery.

I am looking for winery stop suggestions. The trolley tour will focus on the smaller wineries. For the day we are on our own (a Saturday), I am looking for spots that offer good wine, music, and other special offerings - like a market or tasting featuring local food artisans/producers - but are not overly commercial.

I'd also love restaurant suggestions. We'll be having most of our dinners in Greenport but would also like lunch/dinner suggestions for Shelter Island/Montauk/East Hampton.

  1. If you are going to the North Fork and you are not going to have dinner at North Fork Table and Inn in Southhold, you are missing the best food in the area. While Frisky Oyster and Noah's might be good, there is no comparison with NFTAI. You can reserve on Open Table one month in advance. I am looking forward to dinner there on the 21st of this month. Can't wait.

    1. Love Lane Kitchen is a great spot on Love Lane in Mattituck that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is local and good. Reservations are recommended for dinner. This spot is really beautiful and quaint.

Village Cheese Shop, down the block from Love Lane, is the best spot for cheese in those parts. You can pick up some bread, or even some pre-made sandwiches they have and enjoy a picnic.

Noah's in Greenport is a nice spot that has more of a "night out" vibe to it, since you mentioned it's a girls' getaway weekend. They have a small plates menu, so it CAN be reasonably priced depending on how you choose to order.

Frisky Oyster is another one with a night out vibe, but I haven't been there in years.

I'm going to echo the previous commenter and suggest you do a dinner at North Fork Table & Inn. You're going to have to throw down some cash, but it's worth it. There is a prixe fix menu that's at $65 per person. Their wine list can be very reasonably priced. The place is unbelievable. Go there if you can!

My favorite wineries? Corey Creek is amazing and elegant. They have a nice deck in the back that pours on to the vineyard. Raphael is always stunning, but it's closed a lot because they do private events. Old Field Vineyard is amazing and homey. Old Field and Corey Creek are both in Southold. Raphael is in Peconic.
