Tale of Two Birthday Dinners – Best of Times: l’Atelier de Joel Robuchon
During the past month, my wife and I have gone to two different restaurants to celebrate my 50th birthday. The second of these was held at l’Atelier de Joel Robuchon at the MGM. This dinner was celebrated with another couple for our annual birthday dinner as all four of us have birthdays within the month.
We chose the l’unique pre-theatre menu; three course meal for $49/person. The meal started with a very good bread basket which included small personal baguettes and rustic loaf. However, the superstars of the basket were the small pinwheel croissants with just a touch of sea salt. The appetizer choices were sardines on toast with mascarpone cheese or seasonal melon soup; the entrees were either duck breast or halibut with a citrus sauce; and the desert course was crème brulee with fresh fruit or vanilla cake with strawberries. The table order was three sardines to one soup; two duck and two halibut; and four crème brulee. All the food was outstanding. The sardines appetizer was so good that we ordered a separate order as the “after dessert snack” for a couple of us. I was one of the two ducks and it definitely one of the best duck breast entrees I have had, perfectly cooked and quite tasty. The brulee was composed of more delicious fresh berries than crème.
The l’unique part of this menu was that all three courses were served together on three small plates atop one large plate. The menu did promise that the meal would be served within 15 minutes. Service throughout was impeccable. We were a little surprised that the restaurant was not busy as it was the night of an Aerosmith concert.
The final cost was $90/person which included Strip priced cocktails, the meal, an inexpensive bottle of good Spanish wine ($35), and tip.
FINAL IMPRESION: l’Atelier de Joel Robuchon was a terrific meal and the l’unique menu is perfect as a pre-show meal. My wife and I have definitely added this to our pr-concert plans as we prepare for the Las Vegas Philharmonic season this fall.
