howard81 Aug 3, 2010 06:15 PM

Traveling from L.A. to visit the Acquarium this Sunday. Any nice lunch spots in the area? American fare or Italian.

On the way to the Aquarium of the Pacific at the north end of Long Beach.... Jongewaard's Bake 'n' Broil is a great comfort food kind of place for lunch with great house made desserts.

I agree. The BnB is not that far from the 405 and is well worth the swing-over, especially right now when they have truly excellent fresh-peach pie that is overflowing with ripe, fragrant fruit. Hint: If you have your heart set on a particular BnB cake or pie, ask about its availability when you sit down, and have them reserve you a piece, preferably, two -- one to eat there and one to take home (otherwise, you'll be kicking yourself later).

Claire's at the Long Beach Museum; little resturant attached to the museum, on Ocean Blvd, King's fish House on Pine (a chain, but good food), if you want to dirvie just a bit, head to 2nd street (Belmont SHore) eat at Open Sesame (best lebanese food in so.cal), or Taste of Thai...mmmm.

I went to the Aquarium on a Sunday a few months ago. The first three places I was hoping to hit were all closed! Ended up settling on something not so interesting. Beware Sunday hours.

I think 2nd street as mentioned is your best bet if you have the time to head over there.

Could you let us know which places were closed on Sunday, for our benefit?

I think the three were Alegria Cocina Latina (at least for lunch, they open at 5 on Sunday), At Last Cafe, and Long Beach Fish Grill. Ended up going to one of the chains near the aquarium. At least they're walking distance.

Alegria is one place I hope to try, so no go for Sunday lunch.

Very little chow worthy places nearby. A few blocks away, Pine Street has good higher end dining, notably L'Opera (Northern Italian), Madison (American) and Alegria Cocina Latina. Here is a link with some great reviews of the best of Long Beach.

There are a lot of chains within walking distance of the Aquarium.
          Famous Dave's BBQ
          PF Chang
among others. All with nice ocean/marina views.

I recommend Modica's Italian deli at 455 E. Ocean Blvd. Sunday hours are 11-2. Very casual. See the menu here http://www.modicas.com/

Whatever you do, don't make eating at the museum a fall back. Truly uninspired fare.

Their Burger Special is a good deal. $8.25 you get a burger, drink and dessert of your choice. *(fresh fruit pies like peach there's a surcharge). Everything is pretty good there.

I recently had a great brunch at the Starling Diner in the Belmont Heights area, the residential area near Belmont Shores...short drive from the Aquarium. Great little neighborhood spot that also serves lunch....best scones I've ever had. I went earlier in the day and there was no wait but hear that there can be lines.
