      Daniel Patterson of Coi has a smaller (but interesting) cookboook: Aroma ( http://www.amazon.com/Aroma-Magic-Ess... ). That would be quite a gift.

        Third Zuni. Very very good cookbook in that the recipes are very detailed and doable.

        Other possibilities are:
        Ad Hoc (recipes are pretty good, but portion sizes are enormous)
        The French Laundry (cookbook is usable only if the giftee is an anal-retentive freak with a commercial kitchen, or doesn't like to cook at all but loves pretty pictures)

            Second on Zuni. Great cookbook.

            Chez Panisse has nine cookbooks in print, all good. The one we've gotten the most use out of is Chez Panisse Desserts, by the former pastry chef Lindsey Shere.
