Recent Meals @ Legal C Bar, Fiorellas, Santarpios and Stoddards

I know that Legal takes a lot of hits on this board but I had 2 recent visits and both were quite good. Yesterday 4 of us went for lunch. Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and accomodating. We split the Pesto and Shrimp Pizzette and a Spinach Dip. Both were quite good as was the bean dip served with the average rolls. The clam chowder was outstanding and the lobster that my son had was perfectly cooked (they were still serving hard shell which was a surprise). During a recent visit to Fiorellas, I ordered the Chicken Parm, though not a large order, it was a good deal for about $14 and quite good, nice and crisp. On a recent Saturday night, we ended up at Santarpios when we could not get into Rino's. We ordered the combination Barbecue (lamb and sausage) and a Sausage, Mushroom and Onion Pizza. The combo bbq never came (but we were charged for it) and the pizza was very disappointing. I am all about the crust and this crust not great...way too thick. Stoddards was also disappointing, very noisy and over-priced for what we got. I ordered the hanger steak which was very tasty but only about 2-3 oz of meat if I were to estimate. Another party ordered the Pork Tenderloin and was not happy with it at all...too pink and not tasty.

  1. What time were you at Rino's? I usually go early on a Saturday & can get in. Maybe I shouldn't have told so many people about it. ; )
    Don't know if it still there (& you'd be a day late too), but Maggio's in Revere used to do a GREAT stuffed squid - but on Fridays only. They stuff it like a manicotti - I've never seen it done like that anywhere else.

      We were at Rino's around 8 PM and there was a 30-45 minute wait. Normally we might have waited but we had to pick someone up at the airport around 9:30 so it just wasn't going to work.

        I'm surprised to hear that, I was there a couple of weeks ago, got there around 6:30, crowded but not packed. When we left there were no lines, chalked up to the summer and people being out of town.

          I usually get there about 5 - which we're able to walk right in. By the time we leave, it's usually getting full.

    2. We went to Stoddard's on a Sunday night and despite what the website said couldn't get food and the service was so rude I don't think I'd even want to go back to try. Too bad b/c I had high hopes. Just goes to show how bad service can really ruin an experience.

      1. I keep hearing good things about Fiorella's from friends, colleagues and the Board. I used to pop in more than five years ago when I lived closer, and loved it, thought the brick oven pizza rivaled any pizzas around, etc. And I thought that it would never last, fairly isolated location, across from the graveyard, industrial....
        Really happy to have been proven wrong.

          I like Fiorella's, too, particularly when I'm in the mood for chicken or veal parm. (I'm surprised by the OP's comment about portion size; I always found their portions to be huge!), but I have to say that I never thought their pizza was particularly good. Maybe I need to give it another shot.

        2. RE: Santarpio's. You paid for the BBQ combo and didn't get it? I'm not quite understanding this, did you say anything?

            I thought this odd as well. I know it can take a looonnnnggg time to get your lamb or sausage there, but I am not paying for it if it didn't arrive before the check.

              I didn't add that when it appeared on the bill I simply told the waiter that we never received the bbq and he took it off the bill.

                OK, that makes sense. It sucks that you didn't get it, but it makes sense.

                  That's Santarpio's good chow and sometimes mindless but, not intentional service.

                    No kidding! I always thought Santarpio's was the only restaurant in town where the waitstaff was more upset about all restaurants going non-smoking than the patrons! I have fond memories of that old guy plopping a pizza down on the table, cigarette dangling from his lips "Here's ya pie!".
