Beef stroganoff side dish? Yeah, we're going oldschool tonight.

My husband has a flatout craving for beef stroganoff. I'm going to do rice instead of noodles, but what side/s would you go with?

My mind is a total, complete blank.

  1. Since you are going "old school", how about a side of peas with pearl onions and some diced bacon. I remember my mom making that a lot to go with stroganoff.

Oh, yum. It does sound like the perfect side for this, thanks!

By the way, in reading some recipes earlier, I noticed a comment by someone living in Russia who said he normally sees stroganoff served over mashed potatoes or french fries. For some reason, serving it over fries has REALLY got my attention. (I've said before, when I go off low-carb, I go OFF of low-carb.)

I have never heard of the potatoes or fries - interesting. We just always used noodles or rice. Of course, I like to use leftover stew over noodles or rice as well. Just good comfort food in my thinking.

    2. In my family, steamed asparagus or braised cabbage were the traditional sides with stroganoff.

      1. Gramma's green beans boiled with bacon and onions. Prehistoric school. School in a cave.

        1. Stroganoff means noodles to me - I'd no more put it over rice than I would meatballs in tomato sauce. I do agree that the vegetable side should be fairly simple. Plain steamed peas or green beans would be my choice. But I expect someone will suggest roasted vegetables or something with a sauce, both of which would compete with the stroganoff.

Yeah, I agree with this. Well, all except the peas, which I cannot abide under any circumstances.

Agreed on the egg noodles vs. rice. And peas were always the green veggie. I'm making a turkey stroganoff either tonight or tomorrow as well, but it'll still have egg noodles and peas. :-)

            2. If you're going old school, steamed broccoli counterbalances the richness of the stroganoff. Stroganoff is very tasty with crispy little fries, but Russian grandmother used to serve it with rice.
