ISO Crab Cakes

I've tried this dish a few times but have generally been disappointed.

The versions I've tried seemed to have too much filler and not enough crab meat. They also seemed over seasoned and lacking in fresh crab taste.

Is this what I can generally expect? Any recs on places worth checking out?

Thanks!

    1. Arnie Morton's on La Cienega. All crab or nearly so. Also Gulfstream's, (part of the Houston's/Bandera chain - but an excellent chain) at the Century City Shopping Mall.

Is this the Fred Eric Gulfstream???

            1. re: Burger Boy

Don't think so since it's part of the Houston's family of restaurant.

You're thinking of Airstream (formerly(?) of Fred Eric), not Gulfstream.

Gulfstream/Newport Beach, is the ONLY place I'll go for crabcakes - always disappointed elsewhere.

                    • Mastro's...all crab...miniscule cake...Yummy!

                        1. Lasher's in Long Beach does a great job with crab cakes. Also had a really good one at Hollywood and Vine, near the Pantages Theater.

LBQT---have you had crab cakes at Lasher's lately?

I've been going there since they opened and have always been an enthusiast, but the crab cakes I had last week were so poorly done I almost sent them back: at least 50% "cake" and the sauce was so salty it burned. I actually mentioned the salt problem to the server.

I hope this is a fluke because Lasher's is such a good resource for my 'hood.

To the OP---a lot of good press for Hungry Cat's crab cakes. I haven't been yet.

No, Christine, it's been at least 6 months. Thanks for the heads up.

                                2. I like the ones from Water Grill... I think they are better than Mastro's or Morton's.

                                    1. Hands down winner of crab cakes is The Palm, all crab, no mayo, no cake and they are grilled not fried.

is that the palm on Santa Monica near Doheny??

                                          • I know this is a controversial chow-spot on this board, but I LOVED the crab cake at the Hungry Cat. Unlike the lobster roll, the cake was crabby to the hilt, and reallllllly tasty, fresh.

                                                  1. Fisherman's Outlet on Central Ave in Downtown Los Angeles.

$8.95 for 2 nice cakes with real crab meat; no garbage, no mayo, no bread. Just fried crab cakes.

                                                    Good stuff.
