Any thoughts on BIERGARTEN, the Korean-German beer garden in Koreatown??

Their happy hour deals sound FIERCE!

Just wondering about what food to order...

The Beer selection is not HUGE, but it's priced right and it's in KOREATOWN!! Really, there is not anything like this in the area...

The Chinese Chicken Salad: No serious... one of the best we've had, he uses a good mix of fresh greens too... so you know he's not skimping...

The sausage sampler: Four distinct sausages, we each had a favorite. Good snap, cooked well and still juicy! The housemade sauerkraut was also a winner!

The only kinda miss was the Onion Rings and that is ONLY because the batter, although wonderfully crispy and peppery, had NO salt... GAH!!

That being said, the owner Neil was VERY Attentive and OPEN to suggestions. He REALLY wants to make this place work with both the beer selection and top notch food and based on some tweets I've been seeing flying around he's doing some MAJOR leg work and messing with the menu since our visit.

We see ourselves back again soon as we've heard raves about his Tuna Salad and he has beer floats. Open Late AND beer floats.... Thank you Neil for taking the risk....

Do you have any idea if there's a decent wine selection? I'm not a beer drinker at all, but your pictures are so tantalizing, and it's so close to me...

I think they had some wine, but nothing that popped... they definitely had Soju which Neil can guide you towards...

Honestly, the vibe of the place is not totally pubish... it used to be one of the 100s BBQ joints around town, so you could order a coke without looking too out of place...

Thanks, Dommy. WHAT'S A BEER FLOAT?! I LOVE onion rings...

        1. re: Liquid Sky

Beerfloat is exactly what it sounds... Great Beer with Great Ice Cream servered together... at first, I though this was going to be an abomination... but it works.... oh man... it works SO well....

Beer floats (also available at Golden State on N Fairfax across from Animal) are as named, beer with ice cream added. For instance, if you go the menu link here http://thegoldenstatecafe.com/menu.html for GS and scroll down to their "floats" section you will see the description of their beer float.

              Vinoteque downtown also offers them.

P.S. I hope their sausages are better than the ones at WURSTKUCHE. I didn't like their bland-tasting sausages.

            1. re: Liquid Sky

They are different.... more of the finer processed sausages, things like Kielbasa, knockwurst so it's harder to compare, but I will say, these were WAY juicier... WURSTKUCHE tends to over cook their sausages...

The best sausage I ever ate in my life was in Tuscany. Nothing in the U.S. has even come remotely close to that. (I've never been to Germany.)

German Sausages are VERY different than Italian for the most part. More of a mild flavor and smoother texture.

DOMMY: Did you try their "drunken chicken" by any chance?

              1. re: Liquid Sky

No, sorry! Although I think the Glutster blog recently featured Biergarten and this dish...

The drunken chicken is very tasty (albeit a bit pricey)!

Their Korean tacos are really tasty. I intensely dislike Kogi tacos, but I really like Biergarten's version, which does away with the mountain of shredded cabbage, leaving only the meat, and their kimchi sauce. Even the tofu tacos are good, intensely flavored.
