I am traveling to Montreal and was wondering whether someone would advise me on a restaurant with food similar or better than Toque. I am not looking for value deals, just good food. Thanks.

  1. Dunno about current practice but it used to be that when Toqué! was booked solid, they'd refer turned-down reservers to La Chronique. Though the food isn't consistently memorable at either place, I've generally found the experience to be more enjoyable at La Chronique.

    2. For high-end, there's Europea.

and as carwell wrote, La Chronique is very nice also.

      1. I havent been yet but Toque opened Brasserie T! which is supposed to be a more casual version.

        1. I suggest Europea. 10+ COURSE Fabulous Meal

1227, rue de la Montagne, Montreal, QC H3G1Z2, CA

          1. A couple of months ago I had a very pleasant meal at Bistro Cocagne on St-Denis Street where Toqué! used to be before moving to the Old Montreal location.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I tried Toque, and Europea last weekend. I was quite disppointed at Europea in both food and service. As they were very busy that day, I can forgive the service. But I think the quality and taste of the food is not comparable to Toque by a margin, in the way the dish is designed to how it's prepared. I will need to check out La Chronique next time. Thanks again for the suggestions.

            2. Between Chronique and Togue; Chronique wins. We had two meals at each. First meal at Toque we had way to slow service though no one was in the restaurant. Food was so-so. We figured out that a la carte at Toque was undesirable. We warned them next time that we were giving them a second chance, and the service was actually excellent. The somellier both times was great, but the first time, took forever to get to our table. Great wine. Food very interesting with local-ish sometimes organic ingrediants.

Chronique was amazing; They have a great lunch special for $25 prix fixe for three courses. They serve wine by the glass from any of their bottles. THeir list is award winning-best of wine spectator. They had the best filet I have ever had, and the best scallop (i have eaten all over the world extensively). The tasting menu is great as was the alacarte meal. Toque, on the other hand, was only good when we had the tasting menu. Chronique was visually more elegant in presentation style, and the restaurant is more intimate and friendly.
