Closest GOOD Chinese Near Long Beach/Los Alamitos

We're willing to drive, but not ridiculously, for good food. The one cuisine that absolutely defeats us in Long Beach is, as is well-known, Chinese. So where can we go within, say, a ten- or fifteen-minute drive from Eldorado Park (we live in the Plaza neighborhood) and have a good sit-down Chinese meal?

We know of Fortune Cookie on Los Al just off of Katella-- it's OK in a pinch, but nothing better. We want better.

Is there anything great in Cerritos we need to know about? North OC?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Cerritos would be your best bet. Probably a ten minute drive for you. Princess Garden has nice dim sum and there is a Sam Woo BBQ in the same complex. Straight up the 605 and east on South St. passed the Mall. I work in Carson, and that place seems to be the closest decent Chinese food for lunch. 15 minutes from Carson.

    1. Though everybody refers to Cerritos, most of the good Chinese restaurants are actually in Artesia. There are predominantly Chinese shopping centers in the 11600 block of South Street; near the SW corner of Pioneer Bl. and 183rd St.; just north of the NE corner of Norwalk Bl. and South St.; and the giant 99 Ranch Market shopping center in the 17700-17900 block of Pioneer Bl.

Ten Ten Seafood in the 99 Ranch shopping center in Artesia has diappointed the last couple times, at least for dim sum. Little variety & flavor overall.

Sam Woo is Sam Woo, meaning ok in a pinch. I really on go to the takeout section for cha siu by the pound.

Peking Wok near the Cerritos mall on 183rd, was awful the one time I tried it. Panda Express is better, seriously.

Apparently there's some ok to good places (Taiwanese? Shanghai?) on Norwalk just north of South St, but can't comment as I haven't tried them. There are a couple places along Pioneer mixed into Little India that I'm meaning to try some day. Maybe someone else can comment.

      2. If you don't mind venturing a bit farther from Long Beach (which is where I live as well), you should head straight to Mas' Chinese Islamic in the Fullerton/Anaheim area. I was raised on this type of food and being full Chinese and raised in a Chinese house, this is by far the best authentic Chinese food outside the country of China. Please do NOT order your regulars like orange chicken and sweet and sour chicken. Do me a favor and go somewhere else. You must get these dishes as they are what sets Mas' apart: Green onion pancake, hot and sour soup (the only place that serves it right), Beef Noodle Soup with homemade noodles (not the thin one but the thick!), roast chicken, sliced fish with asparagus, thin sesame bread (or thin sesame bread with red bean - a great dessert), and spicy eggplant. There's also the House Special Noodle Stir fry which is the same as the noodle soup variety mentioned above but stir fry; beef or chicken or house or vegetarian all are great options! ENJOY!!!!

        1. I absolutely love Chen's in Long Beach. Its on Broadway and Junipero. The food is great, huge quantities of food and cheap. Its more an "american" style chinese( think sweet and sour chicken, almond chicken, curry chicken, shrimp, beef, etc), but its good. Its very fresh and everyone I've taken there raves about it. Try it, you wont be dissapointed.

          1. Brand new place called Red Wok "Fine Chinese Cuisine" - just got an up-scale looking menu flyer in the mail today, haven't been there yet. "Dine in and take out - no MSG" menu states. 10883 Los Alamitos Blvd., Los Alamitos. (South of Spring/Cerritos, north of Katella, very close to Florista) Sun - Thu 11 am - 9:30 pm. Fr/Sa - 11 am - 10 pm. Lunch specials run $5.75 - 6.95, menu items average $7 - 12, there are a few items on the Specials list that run up to $20 (Peking duck, whole, etc.).

Perhaps some of the local Hounds can check this out.
