Hell's Kitchen 7/27 comments? (and spoilers)

Joanie Jul 28, 2010 04:23 AM

Surprised to not see anything this morning on last nite's show.

I found it somewhat odd to hear Jason (sorry I have to call him Jason and not Jay since that's how he's known in Boston) say he had a "relationship" with Holli altho I guess there may be more than the couple hangs and challenge wins we've seen on TV. Holli's kid was very cute. I should have remembered they bring the families and friends in for a visit.

I still don't understand why Ben won't/can't talk. And one minute after he says he's gonna step it up and all that. I can't imagine it won't be between Jason and Holli for the final but we'll see.

  1. AmblerGirl Jul 28, 2010 04:58 AM

I am hoping its between Jay and Ben but the editors may be setting it up for a jay/holli battle between the two lovers! The drama!

Holli's son was adorable. But how on earth did Ben wind up with such a cute kid too???!!

I think Autumn has gotten a bad rap. She, unlike Ben, doesn't really talk too much about the other cooks. She talks mostly about her shortcomings and doesn't mind admitting when she has made a mistake. Ben can't seem to admit when he has done something wrong. It is always someone else's fault. That to me can never be a good leader.

Yeah like I said, I missed everything up til last week so maybe Autumn was as bad as all the contestants seem to think, but she seems kind of sweet and fairly competent to me. Altho not head chef material I don't think.

Maybe not yet. "Most" of the head chefs I know are older that these contestants. Maybe because they spend time as sous chefs or executive sous chefs. Autums may get there eventually, but she isn't ready for the bigs yet.

    2. LindaWhit Jul 28, 2010 07:26 AM

I really wonder who would have gone home last night - Autumn or Ben. Ramsay seemed thoroughly peeved at Ben for not talking at all and Autumn has proven herself at getting better as the challenges go on.

And with all of Ben's bravado in the confessional about being a better cook and being a leader - he's just not that if he can't speak up. Just don't get it. He seems to go completely deaf on the line. How can you not hear others talking at you?

Had to laugh at Ben thinking he had the teaching challenge down pat. And Ramsay called him out on being culinary instructor as well when he didn't do so well. :-) But wasn't that a previous job? He's at Sel de la Terre now, correct?

I also think it'll be between Jason and Holli (yes, her son *was* adorable!) but they could also do the rivalry thing between Jason and Ben.

I'm going to give up both Hell's Kitchen and Masterchef for the duration! There are enough other programs on that I don't want to waste the time listening to Ramsey's unnecessary vitriol or to see another set-up show (we have the pity element, we have the age element, we have the troublemaker element, etc.) so I'll just read your comments, Linda, and this will let me know everything I need.

Ummmm, I'm not sure if that's a good thing? LOL

And I'm not as interested in HK as I am in TC (although this season, I'm straining to find someone....ANYONE....to root for on TC). I'm really only watching to see what happens to Ben and Jason since they're local guys. But I want Holli to win, just to take the boys down a few pegs. :-) If Jason wins, I can see him moving to London for a year. Ben? Not so sure, but since his daughter is young, it's also a possibility.

I would have commented... buy my laptop is in the shop. Paint me uber disappointed that Autumn didn't go home last night.

And once again the editing monkeys tease us with a plot line and don't put out. I'll watch it next week tho.

I thought Autumn was going for sure but was hoping for smug Ben to get booted instead and was briefly elated until Ramsay did what I was kind of expecting and kept them all.
Would love a Holli /Jay finale. Wanted to see Jay's face when Holli's baby/baby daddy walked in. Yes, I have been sucked into the drama. Oh, wait, what? Its' a cooking show? hehehe. Anyway....so not impressed or excited by any of them, but Jay/Holli would be good with Jay winning and Ben and Autumn going next week. fingers xed.

Is it just me, are all the contestants insufferable? I hope they all lose. Is that what you have to be or pretend to be to get on these reality shows?

In the couple weeks I've watched, I feel like Ben's the only one who comes off like a tool. I wasn't fond of that hot tub seen with J and H, but other than that, I think they're fine and as I've said, I don't understand the Autumn hate.

I agree about Autumn. If what we saw was at all representative of how the night actually went, Autumn had a much better service than Ben. Yes, she brought cold spinach to the pass a couple of times, but she eventually got it, as she has just about every week. Ben, on the other hand, has been called out repeatedly about his lack of communication. In spite of his continued 'commitment' to fix that, he still shuts down every week.

Autumn may not deserve to win, but she sure deserves to be there more than Ben.

The truth is since we are not there, we cannot taste the food and the show is very heavily edited to emphasize conflict, we really have no idea who is the better chef.

I like to read the post elimination interviews of chefs... they have been pretty unanimous that autumn needs to go.

That could be they just don't like her, not that she can't cook. Again, we can't taste the food and we can't even smell it, so how can we judge?
(So it is very different from American Idol, where you can hear them sing and know they are all god-awful, no matter how much the judges shill for them.)

Please, "Hell's Kitchen" producers, give me at least one more scene with Autumn in her bikini, I don't care about the cooking.

Oooh, she should spit out, "Oui, chef!" if he tells her to take off her jacket! But, I think it would be funny if she won and Gordon Ramsay were stuck with her in his kitchen.

Interestingly enough, Jason says that the editing monkeys have totally screwed Ben. He's actually a really nice guy.

No amount of editing can make Ben say "oui, chef", unless he's a CGI creation. That to me is the epitome of Ben's pretentious douchiosity.

You can be nice and still be pretentious. If you're going to slam someone for saying challah incorrectly, then learn to say provenKal correctly, too, especially if you're claim to cook french food. I can believe that Ben is nice to those he considers his equals but he's condescending to others.

Bingo. The challah/Provencal pronunciation situation is a perfect example. He's only seemed to put Jay on the same level playing field as himself. Everyone else was beneath him.

Two will get booted tomorrow night - so let's see if it's first Ben....and then Autumn. :-)

Interestingly, TVGuide Online's writeup for tomorrow is:

"The final four chefs must recreate one of Chef Ramsay's specialties without being told what ingredients are in it. Then, the physical exertion of dinner service proves too much for one of the chefs."

Didn't we see previews last week of Ben saying "I can't do this anymore!"

                2. rockandroller1 Jul 29, 2010 08:30 AM

I seriously do not get what Ben's problem is. If you can't cook and talk at the same time and someone is screaming at you to talk to them, wouldn't you just STOP for a minute and answer? He's almost like an autistic person, he just shuts down and can't seem to stop.

How do we know? He may just intentionally shut down once or twice when somebody is screaming at him, or it may be a habit. The show is necessarily heavily edited. Everything is edited to advance a story line, so everything is selective and ambiguity can be eliminated.

Considering Ben has done this frequently during other services, I'd say it's a safe bet he's just in his own little world and doesn't hear Chef Ramsay until he's up in his face about not responding. That seems to be the ONLY time Ben wakes up and responds.

I've been fighting apathy this season with these contestants. Although in the last two weeks, I've warmed to Holli. Other than the Jay "romance" issue (WHY would a good looking girl like her be interested in him?! Is it just a "thrown together/nothing better to do" [pun intended] scenario?), I think she's pretty solid and is the only one who really deserves to win. I think Jay should be runner up, but I think she's more mature than he is and could shoulder the burden of an executive chef position better.

I think that Autumn is a decent line cook with an unfortunate personality. I think that Ben is a decent cook with a big mouth and an out-of-proportion sense of self-importance. Neither is good enough to uphold Ramsay's reputation (and I've dined at his 3-star flagship restaurant in London...best meal of my life) and doesn't deserve to win a cooking competition. Imagine either of them in Top Chef - they'd be thrown out pretty quickly...but then, so would Jay and Holli, I imagine.

I am surprised at how low the standard is this season...can't they get anyone better?

I don't imagine the winner designs the menu's.

if this was a music competition, it would be to conduct gordon ramsay's newly composed score (or, more likely, to tune the orchestra before the real conductor leads), not compose music to play at ramsay's concert.

It's fun to be with fat men because you don't have to worry about your own body image issues, because, hey, he's fatter : P You can be yourself and have fun and not worry so much. Fat people can be sexy, and big ugly blue haired fat guys who let it all hang out can be really fun to be around and flirt with.

Local area interview with both Jason and Ben:

                      http://www.boston.com/yourtown/news/m...

"Santos and Knack both lamented notoriety’s double edge, saying that although their appearance on the show has opened many career doors, it doesn’t help when they’re out trying to do grocery shopping or work out at the gym.

“There are all these people who want to come meet me, which I don’t understand,” Santos said. “I don’t even want to meet me.”

Three of the four comments there are Ben-centric - and not in a good way. :-)
