Dim sum on carts in Lower Mainland / GVA / Metro Vancouver cities?

a
Amiga Jul 27, 2010 01:45 PM

I've seen the great Vancouver proper dim sum cart thread ( http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/514964 ), but what about other restaurants throughout the Lower Mainland that offer cart dim sum. I'm assuming some might exist in Burnaby and Richmond. What about Abbotsford and Coquitlam?

Last I remember of Abbotsford, no proper Chinese food. But that was many moons ago.

How about Langley? Sherman reports they have carts at Luxe Seafood per Sherman 19653 Willowbrook Drive (604) 530-8286

You can check out August 4/10 post on it here:

I know this thread is supposed to track where you can get dimsum on carts not how good it is but a couple of data points FWIW on two cart places:

Recent trip to Chonqing on Broadway will be my last. With tax and tip, $50 for dimsum lunch for two (!) and we didn't overorder at all.

South Ocean in Richmond was tasty and incredibly good value. We had eight 'bellwether' dishes (har gau, shiu mai, deep fried bean curd roll, yiao tao in rice roll, prawn spring rolls, braised bean curd rolls, bbq pork bao and eggplant stuffed with shrimp) and the bill came to $26.90, taxes in. That was lunch for four BTW. Everything was solid but the df bean curd was outstanding, as was the spring roll and eggplant. The only flaw was a too-thick wrapper on the har gau. We walked in at 12:15 on Canada Day and were seated in ten minutes, despite a full house and people waiting. We will return.

Flourishing Restaurant on Fraser Hwy just east of Glover Road, in Langley City, offers dim sum. Have no idea how good/bad it is. But I've had dinner there 4 times in 10 years and honestly, they were ok:

Hola Amiga :-). I started that thread and I have been collecting places that have dim sum on carts in Burnaby and Richmond whenever I stumble across them as well. Here's what I have so far, bearing in mind there is no quality rating and things might have changed cartwise so YMMV; best to call first:

        Burnaby

Harbour Pacific Chinese Seafood Restaurant 4524 E. Hastings, at Willingdon, southeast corner (604) 294-8059 resos

Po King Seafood Restaurant 150 5665 Kingsway, Burnaby 604.436.2986 The blog review I found was from March 2009 so things may have changed but this place doesn't sound too promising, somewhat inconsistent dishes, loud and not the greatest service. They do serve tofu freshly made table side, which is cool. It is also very cheap, apparently.

        Richmond

Golden Sea City Restaurant on Granville Avenue, formerly Golden Dynasty Seafood Restaurant (from Chowtimes)

South Ocean Seafood restaurant #105-4751 Garden City Road. “good and cheap”

Continental Seafood Restaurant on Cambie Road, big, one of the few cart dim sum places in Richmond according to http://chowtimes.com/2010/07/20/dim-s...

Of the three cart places in Richmond, which would be considered the best? We're visiting Vancouver soon and we would like to try one Richmond cart dim sum place.

My favorite of the three is South Ocean. If you go on weekdays before noon, all dimsums (small. medium. large) are just 2.50 each. Good and cheap as grayelf said.

You know, we should have a Chowdown at one of the cart places -- haven't done this since we went to Golden Ocean last fall. Sticking with the ocean theme, I'd like to try South Ocean as the "good and cheap" comment actually came from a friend of mine; I haven't been yet :-).

            Hey Greyelf,

To help keep your very awesome dim sum cart list updated; Harbour Pacific Chinese at Hastings and Willingdon in Burnaby is no more. Instead a restaurant called Wah Lun has sprung up. They do dim sum but it's order sheet.

Been to both dim sum & dinner service, it's an average restaurant. I think they do authentic Chinese better than say the westernized chinese judging from the Dinehere reviews.

Domo, moyenchow! It is through the kindness of Hounds that the cart list stays updated. But I must say I am saddened to hear of the demise of another cart resto. At this rate, there will soon be little to list :-(.

I know what you mean. Was so shock that my parents default/too lazy to go anywhere else dim sum place Fortune Court (Hastings next to the Kootney Bus Loop in East Van) had also switched over to order sheet.

Haven't been in ages, but I was looking forward to hearing the dim sum ladies say "Har Gow, Sui Ma, Fung Jow"!
