Small Family Dinner near Dupont Circle?
3 - 5 of us are headed down to D.C. tonight for a family burial at Arlington National Cemetery tomorrow morning. We're staying in Dupont Circle and looking for a somewhat upscale, but casual place to have a meal at around 8:30 or 9. The place doesn't need to be 'solemn' or quiet (our aunt was in her nineties when she passed, and lived a great life), just a nice place where we can gather and have some good conversation and good food.
It depends on how "upscale" and "casual" you want. Obvious places that you could consider in the Dupont Circle area that have availabiltiy for 5 people at 8:30 tonight include Restaurant Nora (fairly expensive, but fits the bill), Firefly (more casual but fun and good food) Urbana (a hotel restaurant but dark and upscale) The Palm (a steakhouse so not at all casual) Bistro Bistro (french bistro food, not exactly upscale) i Ricchi (Italian fine dining) DC Coast (can be noisy but fits your description and shouldn't be too bad at that time of night) James Hoban's Irish Restaurant (contemporary Irish fare) or AGORA (more casual Turkish mezes)

Sounds like Firefly might be a good fit for you. Very charming surrounding, casual yet good food, and affordable.
You might also like Hank's Oyster Bar for seafood, Tabard Inn for American (try to get a table in the outside courtyard---one of the nicest spots in town), or Sette Osteria for Italian/pasta/pizza.
