Amelia Island report
Just back from 4 days on Amelia. Had dinner at Merge and was more than satisfied. Wife and I shared a tomato and berry salad--cherry tomatoes (skinned!) with raspberries, mozzarella, arugula and balsamic reduction. Tart and refreshing. Wife had scallops (BIG ones) served over wonderful risotto with braised rhubarb The texture of the scallops was just right. I had a salmon that was herb rubbed and seasoned with aromatic salt, sauteed quickly to give it a nice crunch, and finished in the oven. Served over a creamy orzo with key lime beurre blanc. Just great. We went on a Thursday night and the place was not busy at all. We passed it on Saturday night, however and the parking lot in front was quite full.
Saturday night we went to Espana and ordered two tapas plates--grilled portobellos with Serrano ham and manchego cheese. Sorry I don't recall the ingredients of the sauce, but it worked beautifully with the dish. The other plate was shrimp Mozambique. Sauteed shrimp in a spicy coconut milk sauce with a lot of cilantro. Pretty much a standard sort of curry dish, but done very well.
Also did Sunday brunch at 29 South on the way out of town. I like the heavy use of locally sourced ingredients and the cooking was very good. Had a vegetable fritta and a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs. The eggs had a very bright yellow color that you can only get from well fed chickens. The eggs came from a farm 18 miles from the restaurant.
