Fun Birthday Dinner Needed

Hi!

I'm hoping someone will be able to help direct me to a restaurant to help my sister celebrate her 23rd birthday. She enjoys being the center of attention and corny isn't a bad thing at all but finding someplace that has decent food has been the challenge. We're starting off in Gramercy but wouldn't mind going to another area.

Any direction is appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. Price? Food preference?

Also, family dinner or a bunch of 20 somethings? Not clear from the post.

    1. Eleven Madison Park would be perfect.

For a group of 23 year olds looking for fun and 'Corny'? Not even close; no way. I know when I was 23 I couldn't afford a $200 dinner.

Think Tortilla Flats in the West Village; Cabrito.

For a 23rd birthday who wants "corny?" How is EMP even close?

          1. re: gutsofsteel

I think Littleman was employing a little something called sarcasm....
And who are we to judge if someone wants corny? One man's corny is another man's EMP. And for goodness sake if I hear one more thing about EMP on this board I think I'll just choke myself! It's a great place, we get it, we get it!!!

            1. re: grouchomarx

I couldn't have said it better. EMP, its AMAZING we get it. Jeez

        2. Auds..........two kind ladies have voiced a very strong disagreement about EMP. When I was 23 nothing would make me happier than celebrating my birthday at a fine restaurant like EMP as long as Mom and Dad were paying. If that's not the case maybe a table upstairs at Del Posto might allow your sister to be the center of attention.

ok I guess I was wrong about your post Littleman. EMP doesn't come to mind when one mentions the word "corny". strange reply!
I think most 23 year olds wouldn't get that place. I know I sure wouldn't have at that age. and don't get me wrong, I think it's a wonderful place, one of the best I've dined at, but from reading the manhattan chow boards I'm quite sick of hearing about it already!

Del Posto is just as inapproriate for the OP's request.

              1. re: grouchomarx

I agree with you Groucho. I'm tired of hearing about EMP myself. I'm not going to recommend EMP again. It is great but like you I'm tired of hearing about it. I'm sure someone else will take up the slack I left off. I was serious though. I live in the South and nothing is more fun for a birthday than dining at the very best restaurant around as long as the parents were paying the bill which is what usually happens here. I see young kids celebrating their birthdays here at the very best restaurants around but of course their parents are paying.I have celebrated my two son's b/d's for the past 20 years at the very best restaurants around but I paid the bill. They were perfectly happy at the restaurant of their choice which was always one of the best. But they were not being the center of attention and corny though.

Actually I forget a lot of 23 year olds live in NYC on their own and their parents won't be around to pay the bill. I also did not pick up on the "corny" part at first. I thought the OP was saying her sister liked being the center of attention and "corny" but I see now she meant "acting corny" at the restaurant and being the center of attention was important. OK I don't think I can help her unless Dad is paying the bill and she want's to be the center of attention at EMP which she could be easily but I doubt she could be "corny" as well.

I will go with a table upstairs at Del Posto. Good luck.

            2. I had a fun birthday party at Otto. Good pizza/wine/gelato, loud music.

              Agree also about Tortilla Flats.

They don't have great food, but I love taking people to the gaudily-decorated Indian joints on 6th streets for their birthdays and having the waiters bring out cake to awesome music and flashing lights. And also when it's not their birthday.

I'd do Otto or Stanton Social, with the latter being more glitzy but also more pricey.

                2. DBGB would be a great choice. And if the group is between 6 and 8 people, you might be able to get one of the tables along the right wall which seem like they would be particularly condusive to a party.
