New Thai place in Cloverly

A new small Thai restaurant has opened about two weeks ago in Cloverly, MD, in the location of a defunct Pho place. It's Siriwan Thai, 736 Cloverly St. Silver Spring (301-879-2225). We've eaten there twice; the food is quite good, they have the usual range of Thai standards, service is very friendly, and most entrees are under $10. Happily, they offer free delivery (up to 3 miles), minimum $18. Open 11:30 am to 9:30 pm. I'm very happy to see these small family-run restaurants moving into suburban neighborhood shopping centers, rather than fast-food places (which tiny Cloverly is mercifully free of, so far).

  1. This is the place that has the chef who came from Nava Thai. Famous for the Floating Market Noodle Soup, a rich, potent "Chowhounds-only" concoction. Although Nava Thai still exists, word is that the FMNS is no longer the same.

    DId you see it on the menu? Can you ask about it? It is easily one of the best things I have ever had in the DC area. But be warned, it will burn your lips and reduce you to a sweaty, withering puddle. In a good way.

      I have been to Siriwan Thai three times now and really like their food. I have spoken at length with two of their staff. They both said the chef does NOT come from Nava Thai. That said, give them a try - I highly recommend their Crispy Basil Duck.

        FMNS is definitely NOT on the menu. The counter guy said the place is run by the same people who run Bangkok City. On my two visits there, I've liked the drunken noodles, perfectly coated with a tasty sauce and very spicy as I had requested and the Thai iced tea. I didn't care for the ka pow, though. The chicken was overcooked and the oil was separating from the sauce; flavor wasn't too bad, if a little salty, but not good.

        The kitchen seems inconsistent so far, but I plan to check out more of their menu.

      2. I had a tired, sad Duck Salad for lunch a few weeks ago. Maybe specials would be better.
