Dining advice for Halifax

  • 3

Hi! I will be visiting Halifax next week for a few days and the restaurant scene seems to have changed quite a bit since I last stayed about 6 or 8 years ago. I remember Ryan Duffy's on Spring Garden as a great steak house but hear that it has closed. We are staying at the Price George and I hear that Gio's is a great choice. Is the Press Gang still a hot spot for seafood? We will only be in Halifax for 3 nights, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  1. Gio is excellent and recommended. Ryan Duffy's has relocated to the corner of Sackville St and Bedford Row and is better than it was in its previous location. Just south of there is Cut, which is the #1 steak place in town right now, but expensive. Other places I would recommend are Chives, Fiasco, and Estia. The Press Gang is still there but I have not been there recently and it has changed hands so I cannot comment. Other places I have heard good things about are Pipa, just down the hill from your hotel, and the just-opened Five Fisherman Grill. You also cannot go wrong with Il Mercato for a casual Italian bistro experience and ChaBaa for casual Thai dining..

Thanks so much for the info! Gio's was closed on Sunday so we went to the Press Gang, and sadly, were very disappointed so perhaps a result of the new management. I loved Il Mercato on previous visits so pleased to hear that it is still great. A friend recommended ChaBaa and if we have enough time, will go for lunch, and hopefully a meal at Gio's. Think that I need to spend more time in Halifax! Thanks for the response.

    2. I was in Hali last year for the first time and LOVED it! Great food scene and amazing pub/nightlife scene. I came home and told my buddies it is like East Coast Canada Vegas! I second the recommendation for Gio! There were four of us for dinner and we were all very impressed. I had the lobster which came with a side of mussles and roasted tomato salad, amazing and a steal at $25. Would have paid at least $40 in Calgary! We also ate at Bish which is down by the water. Also very nice, great view of the boats, but I would not say it was as good of value as Gio. Still very good and still cheaper than you would see in Oil rich Calgary. Last but NOT least you HAVE to get a doniar from Pizza corner! I tried all three pizza places and the best IMO is the one on the SW corner (sorry don't remember the name.) Best doniar I have EVER had in my life! Had to run and get another before I boarded the plane. Its just that good, that I would risk flying home with a belly full of donair. Made it home without incident and wished I had brought another home across the country!
