Boston hound will bw visiting Montreal in early August. I have been many times in the past but not for 6 years. What must try foods need I have? I love ethnic foods and the more casual the better for me. We have stong Brazilian, Asian, Portuguese here. What do you have to offer?

i've been out of montreal for about 6 years now myself, and planning a trip to montreal next weekend.
i'll be going to au pied du cochon, and either joe beef or le chien fumant (both if i can fit one in for lunch).
not sure if that helps much, but a few name checks.
We have French, Afgan, Persian, Lebanese, Ethiopian, Morocan, Italian, Portuguese, Brazilian, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, Japanese......................
You name it!
One thing we have is BYOW restaurants that don't charge corkage fees. You could try that.
Personnaly, for ehtnic food i suggest:
-Au Coin Berbere : a BYOW morocain with rind service, generous portions and delicious food. Try the rabbit in Table d'hote!
-MAgdala : Ethiopian cuisine. You eat with your hands. Their coffee is amazing but different. Just a small cup of slightly redish coffee drunk black or with sugar..
For french bistro try l'Express.
For upscale try La Colombe, Pied de Cochon, Le club Chasse et peche... there are many more.
i think montreal does vietnamese really well, much better on the whole than the vietnamese i've had in other cities. try pho tay or banh xeo minh. au pied de cochon is, of course mandatory.
