Need a good coffee shop rec near the W - Foshay Tower

Any good (non-starbucks / chain) coffee shops nearby? Perk (pardon the pun) is STRONG coffee and good pastries.

I think KT has it right -- in the heart of downtown, it seems the only folks who can carry the rent are the chains. But, of the local chains, I like Dunn's best. For an indy coffee shop, the closest I can think of is Espresso Royale, which is six blocks away at 1229 Hennepin. Never been there; can't say if it's worth the trip from the Foshay.

Espresso Royale is entirely decent. I think if you are looking to try something different and it is nice outside, it would be worth the trip to compare to Dunn Bros. However, while it has a more "independent feel" than Dunn Bros. stores (other than the original Dunn Bros. in St. Paul which I love), Espresso Royale is also a small-medium size chain.

I'd suggest Pateen - walk out of W and enter Oracle Center at 9th/Marquette, go up escalator and go right - like you're heading to the Hilton - she's on the left. Or you can go 10th/2nd enter Ruth Chris, walk up escalator and she's on your right. She's got amazing coffee that no one else has (Highlander Grogg, Cookiedoodle, Ethiopian, the list goes on) plus she's got amazing scones or breads ...

Dunn Bros has strong coffee -- though when I went online to look up the address I was surprised to see that yet, it has spread to many states and would be a chain in lots of people's eyes.
