Birthday on Oahu

I live in Honolulu and would like to get fellow ‘hounds opinion on a good, fun, not-too-horribly-expensive place to go for the occasion of my birthday this Friday! A good friend is coming from the mainland to visit, so likely it will just be the two of us.
Some places that immediately popped to mind were 12th Ave Grill, Town, 3660 on the Rise and Du Vin, but I’d like to expand my horizons a bit and go someplace I haven’t been before. One option is Duc’s Bistro, which sounds intriguing. I am also a big fan of Japanese food, but the izakaya-style restaurants I've been to here (Imanas-Tei, Tokkuri-Tei, Gazen) tend to lend themselves to larger groups, so you can try more things...
Anything leap to mind? Location really isn’t a limiting factor, other than it be on Oah‘u.

Thank you!

  1. Duc's, on the edge of chinatown is a great place, consistently under-appreciated by the chowhound community. Hiroshi's also gets great comments. Depending on who is performing Chai's can make for quite a nice evening, and either the House without a Key or the Hau Tree Lanai are hard to beat for setting. Tiki's has gotten some good reviews as well recently.

    1. Shokudo on Kapiolani near Ala Moana Center will give you a number of food and drink options. Uncle Bo's on Kapahulu is more of a local pupu/tapas restaurant. Both can get quite busy and noisy. You could also try happy hours at Kincaids at Ward Warehouse(1/2 pupus) or Morton's in Ala Moana Center if you want an early start before moving on:

      1. You may want to call Town to see what would be available on such short notice, they are
smoking busy all the time even during the week so double check on that. They would be
one of my votes! We are going to Roy's Waikiki for my husband's 50th tomorrow (his actual is Friday) but friends are in and want to treat us ;-) They do hats and streamers and such. I completely advise either!
