Steak at Del Posto

Going for dinner soon and I've been scouting out the menu. The thing that caught my eye is the rib eye steak, but $50 supplement?? I have certainly paid more for a great steak, but on top of the prix fixe? So, is it worth it?

Long time no speak Seal. I actually have had steak at Del Posto but it was a Beef tenderloin (which was for two when I went). Having eaten as many steaks as I have, I must say the steak was just acceptable.

Also, I usually only eat my steaks bone-in, however I found this the most appealing entree option when I went 2 years ago. The portion size definitely did not warrant the price. It wound up being something like $120 for two. I cannot speak to the size of the ribeye or if it is served bone-in. My advice to you would be to order something else and leave the steaks to the steakhouses.

Tyvm steak - coming from you I will treat that advice as gospel and avoid the steak.

Any thoughts on what to order?

Also, is it better to eat there at any specific time? I know some places do a better job and/or are more comfortable early vs late.

I've only eaten there once and it was 2 years ago. It was around 6:30 on a Saturday. The restaurant is a really impressive and beautiful spot and I recommend you request to sit upstairs.

However, to be honest I left feeling a bit dissatisfied. Not that the food wasn't good because it was very good-- what you got of it. And at those prices it was unacceptable. I am not saying that portions need to be tremendoes, but some dishes were frankly quite laughable. Portions sizes are very small (especially the entrees) and the price for me wasn't justified. We ordered a pasta as an appetizer so I cannot say whether or not the pastas are more substantial as main courses. But I would say maybe ordering heavier in the pasta department may be the better idea.

Like I said, my father and I split the steak for two and it really was not much. Also, the other main dishes didn't come with many accompaniments. My sister's fish had a sparce amount of baby vegetables and the menu said it came with eggplant (which included literally a small globe of eggplant). My mother's pork disk consisted of 3 slices of pork and again barely any side accoutrement. Desserts were also only passable. That's why I really haven't had any desire to go back. We had gone to Babbo before Del Posto, and being big Batali and Lidia fans had high expecations for DP. However, Babbo for me anyway was hands down the better all around experience.

Service was definitely to notch, if not a bit OVER the top. The waiter felt it necessary to go into a whole song and dance about every single ingredient when describing every single dish...literally. When describing our crostata dessert he literallys said something to the effect of " It is a delightful pastry filled with sumptuous, plump and juicy stone fruits covered with a glaze and then the edges of the crust are curled up ever so slightly to create a spectacular presentation". We were like okay? I mean it is great that they want to provide in depth descriptions but it was like they were selling it rather than actually just telling you what it is.

Still, I am glad I went to experience it. if you haven't been I think it is one of those places you should try at least once. I just left there feeling a bit ripped off.

We went a couple years ago as well and it was a one and done visit. My feeling is similar to steak85's above - that of feeling a bit ripped off.

Our party of 3 enjoyed cocktails in the bar area admiring the cavernous and well restored building. We had an early pre-theater res and were seated at a nice table in the main dining room. Being early, we had the place to ourselves. We ordered an Anti, Primi & Secondi classical Italian dinner progression.

The best of the evening was the primi for two or more consisting of a selection of pastas. The lowlight of the evening was a dried out $110 veal chop for two. Noted to our waiter that it was overcooked and his response was it's done to the chef's liking! He offered to replace it with something else, but the clock was not our friend, so we took our lumps and ordered an extra glass of vino to wash down the chop.

End of the dinner we were close to $500 for really good pasta and OK everything else. Too many great places in town to go back for a "let's see if we can have a better experience" dinner. If we did return, it would be for the pasta.

Forever wishing that Mario was still in his cozy launching pad (Po)!
