Best dosas?

  • v

I'm wondering where I could find the best or at least really good dosas in Toronto. Anywhere in the 416 is preferable but I'm willing to go north to Markham, east to Pickering or west to Mississauga.

  1. Have you tried the Saravanaa Bhavan at Woodside Mall. I have been told they are fast food/chain restaurant. But I have found the dosas to be okay, certainly not the best, but good enough and close enough for me. Better dosas are further off my beaten path...sigh.

    1. Guru Lukshmi makes some excellent dosas - 2555 Erin Centre Blvd #3 (at Erin Mills Pkwy), Mississauga. 905-803-8310. I've gone to this place a few times, and have never been disappointed.

Saravanaa Bhavan is also worth trying (in Mississauga as well)

Second Guru Luskhmi- It really is fabulous.... I've tried others (Including Madras and Saravana) and think this takes the cake! You must ask them to give you a "patch" on your dosa. They make all sorts of flavored dosas- and people are often unsure, so they make one corner in a different flavour and call it a a "patch".... yum!

        1. re: shariberri

I can't say from personal experience, but I've been told Laksmi is the "best" dosa in TO.

      2. We are big fans of Madras Dosa Hut on Albion Rd just west of Islington. Consistently good, great variety, very fresh, nice service, decent Bollywood videos. But we have not sampled dosa's widely.

South India Dosa Mahal on Bloor west of Dufferin - on the north side, horrible garish pink sign - but very excellent dosas. Also Madras Mahal, next door to Banjara - just by christie pits on the north west corner of the park. Have had less from Madras Mahal, but South Indian Dosa Mahal...while it won't win any design awards...has great dosa.

Another fan of South India Dosa Mahal.

I'm willing to go anywhere in the city for a decent Dosa. My Gold Standard was the Madras Dosa Hut on Ashdale (long gone) then I fell in love with Madras Durbar on the Little India strip (also long gone). Not greatly impressed by Udupi Palace - dosa is nice and light and crisoy but filling is lacking any punch or flavour. Fresh green chillies and fresh choped coriander would be great.

          2. Udupi Palace in Little India, on Gerrard Street, just west of Coxwell. I guess this place also falls into the category of "Fantastic Food" not so great decor. I really enjoyed the Dosas there. Light and crispy with lovely accompaniments.

I like Udupi Palace as well - it's not far from my house. But I've also gone to Saravanaa Bhavan in MIssissauga when I've been out that way working - also pretty good. Good prices at both places.

I sought out Saravanaa Bhavan in Mississauga recently when a work assignment placed me in their vicinity - I found their Masala Dosa to be too greasy, and the condiments seemed bland and somehow "processed".
Still searching for the perfect Dosa!

Third the recommendation for Udupi Palace.

You're right about the decor, but I appreciate that it's at least clean, which is something you can't say about some of the other places in Little India.

Ack! That is a drive I am not likely to make. For us east-enders, something closer would be helpful.

              3. I've always enjoyed the ones at Rashnaa (Sri Lankan) on Wellesly by Parliament.

                But I'm no expert.

                1. The dosas at Udupi Palace are great, but the filling is a bit bland if you're looking for spice and heat. Try the Mysore Masala dosa for full effect. However, having had a few meals in South India, that's the way they tend to be. The sambar, mango pickle and coconut chutney spice it up.

                    1. for my money, i prefer madras palace (somewhere in scarboro). the wrap is always fresh and crispy and the filling well seasoned. (i just felt like kramer with the glowing neon signs inside)

My vote goes to Guru Lukshmi. Excellent. My Indian friends took me there and said it is better than what you get in India!!!

have you been to madras palace recently? i am curious about whether it is good as i was going to go there tomorrow since i will be nearby. i just saw some terrible reviews here so it makes me nervous:

Madras Palace on Ellesmere is closed down as far as I know, but they still have a place in Richmond Hill. It was my go to place but quality on the Scarborough one went down hill till they closed. The Richmond Hill one might be good.

Anjappar Chettinad in Scarbrough Is the best in recent memory for Dosas I get the Ghee Masala Paper Roast, which is thinner and crispier. and its like 2 feet long

Also was good with a lot of differnet Dosas to try

Review on Yelp for Gurulukshmi states the restaurant is closed? I was excited for good indian in Mississauga.

                            2. re: helenhelen

You don't have to worry about the reviews since it no longer exists at the Ellesmere location. Some years back, I and 4 co-workers got violently ill after ordering take-out from there, the worst was one person who was off work for 4 days.

                            1. re: jayzen25

? vcm may no longer be looking for dosas, but others still are.
