salted cupcakes

I was in San Francisco last weekend and tried a salted cupcake at "Bi-Rite Creamery".
It was fabulous. I'm wondering if anyone has found something similar in LA. I've looked
around but no luck yet.

  1. It would seem to me that one could take any cupcake and turn it into a salted cupcake by a fairly simple process.

    1. You might check out the 5th from the top photo from the top here http://nickeldiner.com/photos.htm of the "Salt Peanut Cake" at the Nickel Diner downtown.

You also might like to check out the butterscotch budino at Pizzeria Mozza which comes with large sea salt crystals sprinkled onto the top of the budino and gives you that wonderful salty-sweet yin/yang thing.

      1. Lark Bakery in Silver Lake has a great salted caramel cupcake.

I will deifnitely look into this. It sounds just like what I am looking for. Thanks.

Please don't tell anyone about the caramel cupcakes at Lark, because then there won't be any left for me.
Or the caramel cake there either....

          2. Blue Cupcake also makes a salted caramel cupcake (which her website indicates won the 2010 LA cupcake challenge) and it is fantastic.

            1. I am no cupcake fan by any means, but the fleur de sel caramel cupcakes at Dots in Pasadena are excellent

              1. They have fleur del sel caramel cupcakes at Cupcakes Couture in Manhattan Beach. But they are only available Wed, Fri, and Sun.

                1. I had a salted caramel "hi-top" from Frosted Cupcakery yesterday. It was like a little cupcake sandwich and pretty good.

                  1. Not exactly what you're looking for but of the same general salty persuasion are the Breakfast Cakes at My Delight Cupcakery, immediately south of the 10 in Ontario, on Mountain Ave. ( http://mydelightcupcakery.com/ ) The bakery's description: "A light and fluffy buttermilk cupcake loaded with bits of applewood smoked bacon, iced with a light, buttery maple frosting and topped with freshly crumbled bacon bits." It's delicious, as are their many sweet cupcakes -- all of which seem to come in both full and mini size. Like Blue Cupcake, My Delight Cupcakery won an individual category at the LA Cupcake Challenge this year; also, I believe they finished second overall.

Worth knowing: if you're dragging along a non-cupcake eater, Handel's Ice Cream is a block north of the 10 at the same exit (Mountain Ave.).

                    1. Yummy Cupcakes in Burbank and Santa Monica have a number of cupcakes that may fill the bill. In fact, Buttered Popcorn, Chocolaty Salty Caramel, Mango Chili Lime & Salt and Pepper & Salty Sweet are all available this month (although not on the same day). I have only tried the Buttered Popcorn and while the idea of a popcorn flavored cupcake seemed a little odd, it was delicious!
